IMAGINE, JOHN LENNON COMING TO STOUGHTON: On Saturday, January 5, Dennis Stephen will bring his John Lennon tribute performance, LENNON SHOW back to The Last Shot Sports Bar & Grill in Stoughton. His last performance there was a smashing success (and he really does look and sound like Lennon in performance!) A CRAPPY CONTEST! The student-athletes on the Stoughton High football and Canton High football teams will be the featured players on the SHS football field Thanksgiving morning, but a couple days later, on Saturday, Nov. 24 cows will take over Stoughton High School's football field! At 1 p.m., the field will be divided into grids and tickets are being sold allowing you to purchase one of these special squares of grid, grass and soil. Cows will then be allowed to wander on the field, and whoever owns the grid that the cow poops on first is the big winner of $3,000. The second cow's deposit will result in a $1,000 prize! This fundraiser will help support the Stoughton High School Class of 2013, and will let two lucky players strike pay dirt…

LOCAL RESIDENT A MARINE PLATOON SQUAD LEADER: Matt Rodenbush, a Class of 2010 Stoughton High graduate, is going places in the United States Marine Corps. At Parris Island (in South Carolina) he graduated as the Platoon Squad Leader for the 1060 Bravo Company, and got a meritorious promotion to Private First Class.  Even better, his platoon was the honor platoon, the best platoon out of the six in the battalion of nearly 400 soldiers. As a special aside for his CCD teacher, Mary Ann Caldwell at St. James Church in Stoughton, Matt was a lay reader for his squad every night for three months, and received a citation for it. It looks like those many missions he went on with St. James Church are part of who he is. Matt is heading back to Marine…

STOUGHTON HAS BIG PLANS! The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce hosted a dinner meeting at Courtyard by Marriott Thursday night, with Stoughton officials and the business community gathering to talk about this town's future. With delicious food from Smokey Bones Restaurant in their bellies, and interesting food for thought in their minds, the crowd heard from a number of speakers about Stoughton's Master Plan, and then split into small groups to tackle a number of questions supplied by Juliet Walker and Sue Brown of Brown Walker Planners in Newburyport.  They were hired by the Master Plan Committee, chaired by Joe Scardino.   Chamber Chairman Chris Petrie hosted the evening. Interim Town Manager Joseph Feaster, Jr. was the first to speak, …

Stoughton Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday with Help from Senator Joyce

Senator Joyce turned 50 the same day Stoughton's Dorothy Watson turned 100.

The following is from the Office of Senator Brian A. Joyce: Stoughton's State Senator Brian A. Joyce joined family members, residents and staff at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Stoughton to celebrate the 100th birthday of Dorothy Watson. Dorothy was born on Sept. 5, 1912, a year when the Titanic sank, Fenway Park opened, and Woodrow Wilson was elected to succeeded William Howard Taft as president. Senator Joyce and Mrs. Watson share the same birthday, 50 years apart.

THE UMPIRE STRIKES BACK! For the third consecutive year, local umpires from Stoughton were selected to work the championship game at the very prestigious Cooperstown Dream Park in New York.  Each year, Cooperstown Dream Park runs 13 one-week tournaments for 104 teams from all across the country and Canada (a group of Stoughton 12-year-olds participated in week 6 of the program this summer). This year local umpires Lee Policow, Rich Snyder, John Zaniboni and Paul McKeen were all selected to work the championship games. Rich Snyder was selected for the week 1 championship game. Week 10 saw Snyder return to the big game along with Lee Policow and John Zaniboni. Three umpires from the same town in the same game has never happened before in …

STOUGHTON HIGH ALUMNI AND TEACHER PART OF SOLD OUT MUSICAL: Paragon Park: The Musical is playing a two week, completely sold-out stint at Company Theatre in Norwell. Reviews have been incredible, and the nostalgia for the Nantasket Beach amusement park is at a peek.   About Town checked out a rehearsal of the play, before the Opening on July 27. The music is fantastic, and the memories that the musical brings to all of us who went to the Park is amazing. As someone who once spent all day riding the coaster over 40 times, this one hit a bulls eye in me.   Those with Stoughton ties involved in the production are SHS Graduate Corinne Mason, who plays young Rose; Ron Christianson, who was Director of Fine Arts at Stoughton High for decades …

MURDER IN THE LIBRARY? Actually, the "murder" will be taking place at Town Hall, if Dori Frankel has anything to say about it. Frankel went to the Selectmen's meeting Tuesday night requesting to hold a "Murder In the Library" scripted theater event at the Town Hall on Jan. 18, 2013 as a fundraiser for Support Our Library Association, Inc. (SOLA). The SOLA group, a 501C3 nonprofit organization formed in October of 2011, is replacing the Friends of Stoughton Public Library, as the fundraising arm of the Park Street library. Frankel would like to see this murder-mystery take place in the Great Hall, on the third floor of the Town Hall. The theatrical production will include a cast of eight played by well-known "characters" in the Stoughton …

WHO CAME AND WHO DIDN'T AT THE 2012 ANNUAL TOWN MEETING: Town Clerk Cheryl Mooney released the official attendance records for the 2012 Annual Town Meeting. Perfect attendance should be saluted, and it will be here. But, poor attendance should also be noted. Whether someone was sick, or just wasn't able to make it for various reasons, isn't known, unless the voters want to ask their elected town reps. But, About Town puts the information out to you, and you can take it from what it is - an attendance record. Town Meeting started with an organizational meeting on May 3 and held the first official session on May 7. Town Meeting went nine sessions in 2012, ending on June 13. Attendance was recorded for a total of 10 sessions, including the …
