Officials Determine Stoughton's Jake Hoffman Died from Smoke Inhalation

UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, died in a fire the morning of Jan. 21 at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst.

Stoughton's Jake Hoffman died from smoke inhalation, Amherst Fire Chief W. Tim Nelson told The Republican of Springfield on Tuesday.  Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, was identified as the UMass Amherst college student who died in an early morning fire in an off-campus apartment building in Amherst Jan. 21. He was the lone victim.  The cause of the blaze, which displaced more than 30 people, including more than 20 UMass Amherst students, is still under investigation, The Republican reported March 19. STOUGHTON TURNS OUT FOR JAKE: The Wake at the Farley Funeral Home on Friday night, Jan. 25 for Stoughton's Jake Hoffman had literally thousands of people going through, some of whom waited nearly four hours in bone-chilling temperatures and snow to pay their final respects to this great young man. The home was adorned with photos that took guests from Jake's infancy to college. Many of the people pictured in these photos with him were crying uncontrollably near his open coffin. This great young man, and his wonderful family, had touched so many people that they were literally lined up around the building and down Park Street. The following is the obituary for Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, who died after being caught in an apartment fire Jan. 21 in Amherst, MA. Funeral will be held Saturday at St. James Church, while visiting hours will be held Friday at Farley Funeral Home.

The following obituary is from the Farley Funeral Home website: James E. "Jake" Hoffman, 21, died unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 in Amherst, MA after being caught in an apartment fire. He was the beloved son of David M. and Anne (Morrissey) Hoffman of Stoughton. Born in Stoughton, he was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 2009. In addition to his parents, Jake is survived by his sister Nichole C. Hoffman and his brother Riordan J. A. Hoffman both of Stoughton. He was the grandson of Dorothy (Hannaway) Hoffman of Stoughton and the late Edward Hoffman, James J. Morrissey and Bernice (Hill) Morrissey. He was the great grandson of Edward C. Hoffman of Canton. UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, of Stoughton, died in a fire early Monday morning at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst, according to friends of the family.

STOUGHTON RESIDENT DIES IN AMHERST FIRE: About Town is in deep mourning after learning of the tragic death of 21-year-old Stoughton resident Jake Hoffman in an off-campus apartment fire in Amherst early Monday morning. Hoffman was a student at nearby UMass Amherst. Initially, officials did not release the identity of the lone victim in the Jan. 21 blaze, which also left 32 homeless, according to The Republican of Springfield. However, friends of the family confirmed Hoffman was the victim by Monday evening. I worked with Jake at the UMass Berkshire Dining Commons. Jake was really the nicest kid and had the biggest smile, everywhere I saw him, whether in the dish room, passing in the library, or in our shared hospitality class.
