Alcohol Consumption Among Stoughton Teens Down, But Marijuana Use on the Rise

The Stoughton Schools, the Stoughton Police and OASIS recently partnered to present a Family Drug Awareness Night, which shared eye-opening data on teenage drug use and offered tips on how to talk to children about substance abuse.

Stoughton Public Schools Parent Engagement Coordinators, Maryann Dawson and Shaunte Thomas, partnered with Stoughton’s Police Department and the OASIS Coalition (Organizing Against Substances in Stoughton) to present a Family Drug Awareness Night on Jan. 10. A crowd gathered in the O’Donnell Middle School Media Center eager to learn about today’s drug and alcohol trends and more importantly, how to talk to children about substance abuse. “Talk Early, Talk Often” was the common theme stressed by all of the evening’s presenters.  OASIS’ Substance Abuse Coordinator, Stephanie Patton shared statistical data that showed while Stoughton teenage alcohol use has gone down by approximately five percent, its marijuana use has risen almost 10 percent…

Purchase of Alcohol for Minors Put to Test with Stoughton Police "Shoulder Tap" Operation

The Stoughton Police Department conducted a "Shoulder Tap" operation Thursday night, where underage volunteers asked adults to purchase alcohol for them. 92.8-percent of attempts were declined - encouraging, but still a lower rate than in past years.

The Stoughton Police Department, partnering with OASIS (Organizing Against Substances in Stoughton) conducted a "shoulder tap" operation Thursday evening, where underage volunteers were stationed outside of liquor stores in town asking adults to buy them alcohol, according to a SPD release. The overwhelming majority of adults refused. According to the release, 110 people were approached, with 102 refusing - a 92.8-percent success rate. The eight who agreed were not arrested; that wasn't the purpose of the operation, Executive Officer Robert Devine said. No alcohol was ever purchased for a minor, Devine said. If the adult agreed, he or she was met by an undercover Stoughton Police officer and handed a "Yes" card and had the consequences of …

Stoughton Police Make Several Alcohol-Related Arrests

The Stoughton Police made three OUI arrests and arrested two for possessing alcohol under the age of 21 last Saturday, Nov. 10.

Stoughton Police responded to three motor vehicle accidents and made three additional motor vehicle stops last Saturday, Nov. 10 which led to the arrests/summonses of seven different people. As a result of these six incidents and subsequent arrests/summonses, the SPD issued three charges of operating under the influence (OUI - liquor), two charges of underage possession of alcohol and three charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, among other offenses. The following information is from the Stoughton Police logs. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. Drug Possession/Underage Possession of Alcohol Three teens were arrested early Monday morning in Stoughton for possession of alcohol and a Class D drug. Stoughton Police found a motor vehicle on Wheeler Circle at 1:08 a.m. on Oct. 8 and placed the three occupants under arrest. Kyle Pirro, 17, of Messenger St. in Canton, was charged with distributing a Class D drug; Timothy Griffin, 19, of Wood Rd. in Canton, was charged with being a minor carrying/transporting an alcoholic beverage; and an unidentified 16-year-old juvenile was charged with distributing a Class D drug. *** OUI Arrest Stoughton Police …
