Biggest News Story of the Year? Patch Editors Make Their Picks

Patch editors look back at the biggest stories of 2011.

As the Patch editors look back at 2011, they are picking the biggest news stories of last year. Benjamin Paulin, Dover-Sherborn Patch Editor- The biggest news event of the year would have to be the death of Osama bin Laden. Not only did it help to bring some semblance of closure to the countless victims he affected but it also helped shift the focus toward the importance of our military and all they do overseas. Seal Team 6 gave us a glimpse of how ordinary men and woman from the United States can do extraordinary things in the face of danger. Michael Hardman, Regional Editor, Attleboro Patch Editor - The weather was the biggest story of the year and it showed how faulted our infrastructure in the area has been become with the lack of …

Person of the Year? Patch Editors Weigh in With Picks

In this edition of Patch editors look back, we're giving our selections for Person of the Year.

As we enter 2012, Patch editors are looking back at 2011. In this installation, we weigh in on the "People of the Year." Jeremie Smith, Medfield Patch Editor - SEAL Team 6. This unit of military specialists accomplished its counter-terrorism mission in Pakistan in May when it successfully killed Osama bin Laden. The successful mission was celebrated throughout the country and SEAL Team 6 quickly became anonymous heroes. These men, in my opinion, are the Persons of the Year. For more on SEAL Team 6, click here to read TIME Magazine’s blurb on Person of the Year candidates. http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2098471_2098472_2098501,00.html Kelly Mello, Norton Patch Editor - Kalle Lasn for his role in Occupy Wall …

Best Songs of 2011? Patch Editors Tell You Their Picks

In an end of the year series, Patch editors are looking back at their favorites of 2011.

What was the best song in 2011? Usually, our editors are the ones asking the questions for the New Year's weekend, but we're turning the tables a bit. We've been asked for our top picks in movies, books, songs, person of the year, event of the year and best Boston sports moment. In round three, we give our best song for 2011. After reading ours, please share yours with us in the comment section. Kelly Mello, Norton Patch Editor-Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." Adele has such a gorgeous voice, and it's about time America realized it. Though the radio has tried to run "Rolling in the Deep" into the ground, you can't deny how fun it is to belt out this tune when you think no one is listening. Ben Paulin, Dover-Sherborn Patch Editor-The song of …

Darn You George Jetson

In the 1960s, we were promised a much different 2012 from the predictors, including space travel, flying cars and robot maids.

This is not what I expected. We're entering the year 2012. By now, I should be using my jet pack to get around the neighborhood, or taking a pill for food. Of course, I’d only be working a couple of days a week and playing golf on the moon the rest of the time. I was expecting to be using my four-iron on the 10th crater. Darn George Jetson. In the 1960s cartoon “The Jetsons,” George zipped around in a flying car, had a robot maid and worked a few hours a day. He even had a machine put his clothes on. This was supposed to be life in the 21st century. We were lied to. What a rip job! I’m on my 14th hour of work today, existing on coffee, which was made on a stove, not by pushing a button. I was promised a flying car by now. There was a …

Best Movies of 2011? Patch Editors Tell You Their Picks

As we say good-bye to 2011, Patch editors are looking back at the best of the year in their eyes.

What was the best movie of 2011? Usually, our editors are the ones asking the questions for the New Year's weekend, but we're turning the tables a bit. We've been asked for our top picks in movies, books, songs, person of the year, event of the year and best Boston sports moment. In round two, we give our top films of 2011. After reading ours, please share yours with us in the comment section. Mike Gleason, Wrentham Patch Editor- The Adventures of Tintin. In a somewhat disappointing 2011 (Transformers and Twilight were both top grossers), I'd say the best movie I saw was the most recent. Tintin is Steven Spielberg's first animated feature, and he imbued it with the sense of adventure that made the Indiana Jones series such a joy to watch. …

What Was the Best Book You Read in 2011? Patch Editors Weigh in With Theirs

With the start of 2012, Patch editors are weighing in on books, movies, sports, events, music and Person of the Year.

What were we reading in 2011? Usually, our editors are the ones asking the questions for the New Year's weekend, but we're turning the tables a bit. We've been asked for our top picks in movies, books, songs, person of the year, event of the year and best Boston sports moment. In round one, we give our top reads of 2011. After reading ours, please share yours with us in the comment section. Mike Gleason, Wrentham Patch Editor. The best book I read in 2011 was David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest. Wallace's obscure sense of humor and ability to hold forth on a wide variety of topics, from tennis to addiction therapy, really sell this sprawling tome. Though its overall picture can often seem incomplete, the various vignettes are clever, …
