Can UMass Football Survive?

UMass Football has gone 2-22 in their two seasons in the Division 1 football and regularly appears on ESPN's bottom 10. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/page/bottom10131204/alabama-pulls-peter-griffin-auburn  They recently just fired their coach and talking heads from all of the local sports media establishments are saving the program is doomed.  Well I say its easy to say the program is doomed when things look at their worst.  Thank God these local sports  media types were not our generals and lieutenants during the Civil War or else we'd probably be know as the Confederate States of America.  I'll admit things look bleak right now, but the UMass adminstration did the right thing by firing the coach and starting over.  There was no improvement in the football team from year 1 to year 2. The fans of the team were just asking to see some progress in the right direction and over the past two years no progress occured.  The next coach will be a very important hire for the football team and could potentially determine if D1 football for UMass is viable.  Personally I think the appetite for football in Massachusetts is underrated.  We love football in this state!  We're not as crazy as Texas but we have a ton of passion for sports in this state.  If UMass football can start winning  I think it will draw interest from many sports fans in the state.  In short the program is not doomed it just has a very tough uphill battle.
