Werman's Shutout Gives Stoughton High Baseball Win over Canton

Savvy base running was also key in the Black Knights victory. Check out photos and a video interview with Sam Weman, Pat Jackman and Will McGrath in the media gallery.

Making his first start of the season, junior Sam Werman made the most of the opportunity, shutting out Canton Friday afternoon, as the Stoughton High baseball team picked up a 5-0 win at home.

"He threw strikes, he got it done, went the distance and got the shutout. Very happy for him," Stoughton coach Mike Armour said.

With the win, Stoughton improves to 5-4, climbing above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Canton, meanwhile, falls to 1-8.

A passed ball and error allowed Will McGrath and Mike Connelly to come around and score in the bottom of the first to give Stoughton a 2-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when some shrewd base running doubled the Stoughton lead.

Jovani Pires singled to lead off the inning. He stole second base and a passed ball got him to third. Pat Jackman then walked, but with second base unattended, as soon as Jackman reached first, he didn't stop, and immediately stole second, putting runners at second and third with no outs.

"Pat took the turn around first and noticed second base was pretty much unattended, so Pat just being Pat, who is very heads up, he just kept it moving, strolled right into second," Armour said. "Very heads up baseball. That's just the kind of player he is."

A McGrath sacrifice scored Pires, and Jackman came around to score on a sacrifice from Connelly to make it 4-0.

"We didn't have many hits in the game, but we did the right things at the right time," Jackman said.

Zach Gibb walked and stole second in the bottom of the sixth and later scored on a single from Werman.

On the mound, Werman allowed just five Canton base runners, and retired the side in order four times.

After starting 0-3, the Black Knights have won five of their last six games. The team's last three wins have all been shutouts.

"Hopefully, we're starting to find our stride and continue to get better because there's still room for improvement," Armour said.

Stoughton travels to King Philip on Monday.
