Struggles Continue for Stoughton Hockey in Holiday Tournament

The Black Knights will look to bounce back in the consolation game.

The Stoughton High boys’ hockey team (0-4) again participated in the annual Petruzziello Plaza Tournament hosted by Dedham High School at the Noble & Greenough School on Tuesday night.

Stoughton’s first round opponent was the host team Dedham, who like the Black Knights had been struggling over the first two weeks of the season. Unfortunately for Stoughton, theirs were the struggles that continued into the final week of the year and they lost 6-0 to the Marauders.

Dedham came out quickly and scored three first period goals. They followed them up with two more in the second, and another in the final period. Stoughton was outshot, 44-15, with Black Knights’ sophomore goaltender Paul Sheehan making 38 saves. Dedham took advantage of Stoughton’s defensive breakdowns.

Dedham got a hat trick and an assist from Jason Riley, two goals and two assists from Justin Nee and a goal and two assists from Jeff Durham. Goaltender Jim Riley saved all 15 shots on net.

Dedham opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest and followed it up with goal a in the seventh minute and another with three minutes left in the opening period. The Marauders scored in the opening and final minute of the second period and midway through the third.

“We had too many mistakes in the defensive zone and we need some of our veteran players to step it up and help the inexperienced players through the early part of this season,” said Stoughton head coach Dan Mark.

Stoughton forwards senior Dan Swartz, who had a team-high three shots on net, and junior Jacob Rohrer had solid efforts and some scoring opportunities, but all to no avail. Stoughton only had one penalty and was never shorthanded, but the Black Knights went 0-for-4 on the power play in a fast-paced contest.

“We played a little better offensively and although it has been frustrating, we just need to keep plugging away and gain more confidence and consistency,” said Mark. “It was good to see that no one quit and that the effort is there.”

Stoughton now falls to 0-4 on the season and has been outscored 23-2 in those matches. The Black Knights will next play Brookline in Thursday’s consolation game at 5:00 PM, while Dedham advances to the Championship game against Brockton.
