STOYAC Pop Warner B-Raiders Win Overtime Thriller, Advancing to Super Bowl

The B-Raiders beat Westwood in the semifinal round of the Hockomock League Division 1 Junior Midget Pop Warner playoffs and now face undefeated North Attleboro in the Super Bowl Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. at Stoughton High.

The STOYAC Pop Warner B-Raiders are going back to the Super Bowl after pulling out a thrilling 34-33 overtime win over Westwood this past Sunday morning in Westwood in the semifinals.

With the semifinal round win, Stoughton will now take on North Attleboro in the Hockomock League Division 1 Junior Midget Pop Warner Championship (a.k.a. the Super Bowl) Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Stoughton High football field.

The Westwood game was a back-and-forth affair between "two very evenly matched teams with many skilled athletes on both sides," coach Greg Spohn said.

After the game was tied at 14 going into the half, Westwood scored to make it 20-14 and then Stoughton scored the next two touchdowns to go up 27-20. But, Westwood scored again with less than a minute to go to tie up the game at 27, sending the contest into overtime.

In OT, Westwood scored on its possession, but did not convert the extra point. Stoughton then scored on its possession (an Izon Swain-Price touchdown) and made the extra point, for the win.

In addition to the overtime TD, Swain-Price had an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Nick Spohn scored two touchdowns for Stoughton as well, including returning the opening kickoff for a 70-yard score. Ryan Sullivan also scored for the B-Raiders.

The B-Raiders advanced to the Super Bowl last season, losing to King Philip.

This year, Stoughton will face undefeated North Attleboro in the B-Level Superbowl at Stoughton High (Stoughton is hosting the Hockomock Pop Warner championship games for all levels on Sunday). North Attleboro beat King Philip 22-0 in the other semifinal game to advance.

Stoughton finished the regular season 7-2, with one of the two losses coming to North Attleboro, 20-8. Stoughton's other loss came to Foxborough, but the B-Raiders avenged that loss in the opening round of the playoffs.

"NA is undefeated at the B level and we respect them. That being said, we will be ready and our players are looking forward to the challenge," Spohn said.
