SHS Boys' Tennis

Still in search of their first team win of the season, and their first team win in four years, the Stoughton High boys’ tennis team has stayed competitive, but has ultimately come up short of securing a victory.

Most recently, the team was edged by King Philip 3-2 Monday on the road.

The first doubles team of junior Joe Ialuna and sophomore Chris Oliveria won their match 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Jalen Joseph provided the other point for the Black Knights, winning 6-2, 6-4 at second singles.

Coach Matt Bernstein gave credit to Junior Jeff Zeserson for coming through with a “strong performance” against his opponent at third singles. Zeserson fell in three sets, winning the first set 6-4, but losing the next two sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Last week the team fell against North Attleboro 4-1, Sharon 5-0 and Canton 4-1.

Jeremy Lim earned the point for Stoughton at North Attleboro, with a 6-2, 6-3 win at singles.

Against Canton, the second doubles team of Sophomore Sheldon Oliveria and senior co- captain Josh Levenson won their second match together for Stoughton's only point. Bernstein again credited Zeserson for a “solid performance,” fighting “hard though a tie-breaker.”

The team, 0-9, has a rematch at North Attleboro on Friday.

SHS Girls' Tennis

After a promising 2-2 start to the season, including wins over Norwood and Randolph, the Stoughton High girls’ tennis team, between April vacation, bouts with Mother Nature and quality of opponent, has run into a rough stretch of its schedule.

As a result, the Black Knights have been swept in their last five matches, losing 5-0 to Mansfield, North Attleboro, Sharon, Canton and, most recently King Philip.

Against King Philip on Monday the doubles duo of Taylor Goodrich and Vicki Tran lost a close match to their opponent, 6-4, 7-5.

“Last week [against NA, Sharon and Canton] was tough; I felt a few of my girls didn’t give their best effort at Sharon for whatever reason and this week due to school field trips I will be missing a couple players,” head coach Bill Donovan wrote in an email. “This part of the schedule I knew would be tough competition [and it’s] made even tougher when my full team is not present.”

The Black Knights (2-7) look to rebound Friday in a rematch with North Attleboro on the road.
