Stoughton overcame a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the last (seventh) inning, and then held off a threat by the Presidents in the bottom of the inning, to secure the much-needed victory.

“We have put ourselves in a position to get into the (postseason) tournament, after a slow start to the season, and we’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve played much better as the season has gone on,” Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said.

Quincy jumped out to a 1-0 lead, with a run off of pitcher Jess Olans in the first inning. But, Stoughton came back to tie the game with a run in the second inning. Nicole Beauregard led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on an infield out and with two outs, scored on a Megan Guerard single.

The Presidents retook the lead in the third inning, 2-1, and that’s how it remained until Stoughton’s last at bat in the seventh inning.

Senior captain Molly Zuk started the inning with a leadoff double. Olans followed with a single, but Zuk had to hold at third. Guerard then connected on a long fly ball to centerfield that was caught, but the sacrifice fly scored Zuk to tie the game 2-2, giving Guerard her second RBI of the contest.

Kelsey Moriarty then belted a double, scoring Olans with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Olans then went out and held the lead, pitching out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Olans allowed a lead off single, then got a strikeout, before giving up another single, putting runners on first and second. Olans again displayed a lot of poise, forcing the next two Quincy batters to ground out, giving Stoughton the win.

Olans had ten strikeouts and allowed only one run, despite giving up nine hits and pitching in and out of trouble throughout the game.

“This was a great win for us and showed that we can battle back and if we remain focused, we can play with any one,” Sullivan said. “We’ve now put our fate in our own hands. It will be a tough challenge, but it’s great and exciting to still be in the [postseason] hunt this late in the season.
