Stoughton High Indoor Track Teams Both Win Season Openers

The Stoughton High boys' and girls' indoor track teams started the winter season off on the right foot Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center with both teams earning victories over Hockomock League Davenport Division rival Canton.

BOYS

In the past three meetings with Canton, the Stoughton boys' indoor track team finished with two ties and a one-point loss. This time there were no dramatics as Stoughton won decisively, 70-21, with the Black Knights sweeping the hurdles, 300-meter, long jump and shot put events, coach Harvey Blonder said.

Kevin McDonald was the high scorer this first meet with 12 points and was the "athlete of the meet," Blonder said.

Harley David (8.74), McDonald (8.88) and John Eppenstein (9.22) started the meet off with a sweep of the 55-meter hurdles. In the 300-meters, Malachi Baugh (38.49), Pat Jackman (39.55) and Frantzy Joseph (41.37) finished 1-2-3. 

Jackman (18'1") and McDonald (18'1") tied for first in the long jump, with Baugh right behind at 17'10". 

Shawn Connolly (39'3), Jack D'Addieco (38'3) and Kevin Lucas (36'8) finished 1-2-3 in the shot put.

David Lockhart (4.56/11.00) and Wayne Barnaby (4.57/10.56) pulled double duty in the mile and 2-mile and finished first and second in both events. Lockhart was first in the mile, turning in his first sub 5-minute effort, and Barnaby finished first in the 2-mile.

McDonald scored the only points in the high jump, coming in first and clearing 5'4"

The 4 x 400-meter relay team of  Jason Marshall, Sheldon Oliveira, Zach Gibb and D'Addieco also won, finishing in 3:48.

Baugh and Jackman added points in the dash, and D'Addieco also scored in the 600-meter event. Alec DeNapoli (2:58.2) got a second place in the 1000-meter race. Evan Schulze also ran well in the 1000, in what was his first indoor meet.

Other team members just off the scoring pace were Mike Romaine (600-meters) and Alex Green (shot put), who both had solid performances, Blonder said.

GIRLS

The Stoughton High girls' team beat Canton 49-46, with the meet not being decided until the final event.

Stoughton's 4 x 400-meter relay team of Rachel Berkowsky, Shannon Barkey, Kelly Barros and Imani David delivered the Black Knights a win, finishing first with a time of 4:38.45.

Maya Barrant led the way for Stoughton and was the leading scorer with 8 points, coach Bob Clarke said. Newcomer Shelby Sprague chipped in with 6 points.

Barrant finished first in the 55-meter dash (8.22 seconds) and second in the hurdles (10.47 seconds). Sprague finished first in the 300-meter (49.01 seconds) and third in the hurdles (10.53 seconds).

Kerry O'Neil won the 2-mile for Stoughton (12:55.32) and newcomer Ada Monyeki won the shot put (23' 4.25").

Second place finishers included Brittney Joyce (8.23 seconds in the 55-meter dash); Barros (1:47.88 in the 600-meters); Berkowsky (3:33.77 in the 1000-meters); Susanna Noe (13:28.80 in the 2-mile), and Lauren Carmichael (21' 06.50") in the shot put.

Both the boys' and girls' face Foxborough in another Davenport Division meet next Saturday, Dec. 15 at Boston University.
