Stoughton High Hockey Unable to Recover from Bishop Feehan’s Second Period Outburst

Bishop Feehan scored 8 goals in the second period, with Stoughton falling 9-1 Wednesday night at their home rink in Brockton.

After a scoreless first period, and a scoreless start to the second period, the Bishop Feehan hockey team exploded for eight goals in the final 11:35 of the second, en route to a 9-1 win over Wednesday evening at the Asiaf Arena in Brockton.

Stoughton falls to 0-3, while Bishop Feehan improves to 2-0-1.

While Bishop Feehan controlled possession for much of the first period, Stoughton kept the Shamrocks off the board thanks to Black Knight goalie P.J. Sheehan.

But in the second period, the game quickly got out of hand.

Bishop Feehan scored four goals in a span of 3:01 to put up a 4-0 lead with 8:36 left in the second period. John Jarbeau scored first, followed by Jake D’Ercole. Nick Carvalho had the third and fourth goals.

Stoughton scored just 38 seconds after the Shamrock’s fourth goal of the game to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 7:58 left to go in the period. Connor Heffernan had the goal, with Josh Rubenstein recording the assist.

Unfortunately for the Black Knights, that was as close as they could get. Bishop Feehan outshot Stoughton 33-14 on the evening, and went on to score four more goals to close out the period, giving the Shamrocks an 8-1 edge heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Michael Skerry scored Bishop Feehan’s final goal in with 4:28 left to play, to account for the final score.

“Our goalie kept us in the game [in the first period]. We were working hard and in the second period we just totally fell apart,” Stoughton coach Dan Mark said.

“I wish I had an answer, I really don’t right now. We feel like we just got run over by a truck.”

The second period scoring outburst left both coaches—Mark for Stoughton and Paul Hulbig for Bishop Feehan—in awe.

“I’ve never seen that before,” Mark said.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen that,” Hulbig added.

“It seemed like once we got on that roll the shots, some of them that didn’t go in in the first period started going in in the second period,” Hulbig said.

Eight different Bishop Feehan players had a goal and six recorded an assist.

“I like to see a lot of kids listed on the score sheet,” Hulbig said.

After the second period, Stoughton rebounded and only allowed a single goal in the final period.

“I felt they didn’t quit, which is really important,” Mark said of his players. “They showed a lot of character.”

Bishop Feehan next plays in the Bellingham Christmas Tournament. It starts with a game against Holliston on Dec. 27, followed by a game against Bellingham or Ashland. The Shamrocks also play North Attleboro next Friday.

Meanwhile, Stoughton plays in the Dedham Holiday Tournament, which starts with a game against Dedham on Dec. 27. Stoughton will play either Brockton or Brookline on Dec. 29.
