A goal and an assist from freshman Albert Smith and a shutout in net by junior captain P.J. Sheehan helped the Stoughton High hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Apponequet Wednesday at the Driscoll Arena in Fall River.
Stoughton, winners of two straight for the first time since February of 2010, improved to 3-14-2 on the season. One of those two ties came against this same Apponequet team back in December.
In the rematch on Wednesday, junior captain Brandon Lima got Stoughton on the board first with a goal 5:33 into the second period. Smith picked up the assist, his team-leading fifth of the season.
Smith then added some insurance scoring an unassisted goal 6:05 into the third and final period.
Sheehan made 31 saves in net, picking up his first shutout win. It was Stoughton's first shutout win since January of 2011.
In addition to goal scorers Smith and Lima and Sheehan in goal, Stoughton coach Dan Mark also credited sophomore Drew DiStefano for his play on defense.
Overall, Stoughton had 32 shots on net, just the third time the Black Knights have outshot an opponent this season in 19 games.
Stoughton wraps up its season Friday at 4:40 p.m. against North Attleboro at the Foxboro Sports Center.
