Big plays on offense coupled with a “bend and don’t break” defense, which forced four turnovers on downs, led the Stoughton High Black Knight football team past Somerset-Berkley last Friday on the road.

The convincing evens Stoughton’s record at 1-1 on the young season.

Marcus Middleton led the way with three touchdowns; Aaron Mack added an 88-yard touchdown run; Malachi Baugh had a 45-yard touchdown scamper; and Alex Fernandes had two passing touchdowns, and led the offense at quarterback.

Stoughton stayed turnover free, while forcing (and recovering) a fumble on a Somerset-Berkley kickoff return.

A sequence of plays in about a four-minute span during the second quarter doubled Stoughton’s lead, and put the game out of reach.

The Black Knights, leading 14-0, put a halt to a Raider drive on fourth down deep in Stoughton territory. On the next play, Mack turned in the 88-yard touchdown run.

Then on the ensuing kickoff, Somerset-Berkley fumbled, Stoughton recovered, and on fourth down Fernandes connected with Middleton for a touchdown pass, putting Stoughton up 27-0 heading into the half.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

Stoughton travels to Mansfield this Friday for the first Hockomock League game of the season. This will be the third straight game for the Black Knights against a 2010 High School Super Bowl participant.

The Hornets have had the Black Knights’ number this past decade—the last time Stoughton earned a victory in the series came back in 2000.
