The Hornets had rallied to win their first two games of the season against Christian Brothers Academy and Needham, but there would be no comeback against the Black Knights.

Mansfield fumbled the kickoff and Stoughton recovered. The Black Knight sideline erupted; the Stoughton offense kneeled once, and the upset was complete.

Stoughton scored first on a field goal from Fernandes in the final minute of the first half to go up 3-0.  They added a safety with 7:13 left in the third quarter, before Fernandes added another field goal with 40 seconds left to account for the final score, 8-0.

The Hornets, a team that scored 67 points in their first two games this season, and hadn’t lost since September 10, 2010, were shutout at home.

It was Stoughton’s first win over the Hornets since 2000--when the current Black Knights were in their first years of elementary school.

Both teams are now 2-1 on the season. It was both teams’ first Hockomock League game of the year.

“It means a lot. We played hard,” Stoughton coach Greg Burke said of his team’s victory. “All I care about is we’re getting better every game.”

Burke gave credit to running backs Malachi Baugh and John Olsen and to lineman Brandon Alves and Andrew Paredes.

Marcus Middleton and Aaron Calixte came up with key interceptions for Stoughton on defense. Turnovers were a problem throughout the evening for Mansfield.

“Our defense which has struggled in weeks 1 and 2 played great tonight and our offense which had been great in weeks 1 and 2 didn’t show up,” Mansfield coach Michael Redding said. “I give Stoughton credit. They played hard.”

Stoughton plays Sharon next Saturday at home. Mansfield plays at King Philip next Friday.
