Stoughton High Field Hockey Tops Sharon, Earning First Win This Season

The Black Knights beat the Eagles 6-1 Thursday afternoon in Stoughton.

Seven different players either had a goal or an assist for the Black Knights as the field hockey team earned its first win of the season, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at home against Davenport Division rival Sharon.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Sharon, but drainage issues at the Sharon High fields following Wednesday’s heavy rain gave the Black Knights an unexpected home game (even though Sharon was considered the “home” team).

MacKenzie Hudson led the way for the Black Knights with two goals and three assists; Heather Baeta added two goals of her own; Taylor Goodrich and Nicole Kerman scored one goal a piece; Kayla Floro chipped in with three assists; and Jessica Freitas and Shannon Bagley both added assists in the second half.

With the win, Stoughton improves to 1-8-2 on the season. Sharon has recorded non-league victories this season, but is still looking for its first Hockomock win.

The key to Stoughton’s victory was simple: “We put the ball in the net and they didn’t,” Stoughton coach Dan Mark said.

“[We were] in the Stoughton defensive end quite a bit of time, but couldn’t get it in the net. [We] fell short of the mark,” Sharon coach Peg Arguimbau said.

Sharon kept Stoughton goalie Christina Bacon busy. She made eight saves on the afternoon, but the Eagles spoiled her shutout bid when Rachel Duggan scored with only 35 seconds left in the game.

“I would have liked to see her get the shutout,” Mark said. “I thought she made a lot of nice saves.”

“It was a deceiving score; Sharon played well and had a lot of good opportunities,” Mark added.

Baeta got Stoughton on the board eight minutes into the contest. Stoughton added to their lead, scoring three times in the final 3:23 of the first half, to take a 4-0 advantage going into the second half.

In the second half, Stoughton scored twice more. Kerman recorded Stoughton’s final goal with 11:33 left.

Thanks to rainouts from earlier this season, Stoughton ends the 2011 campaign with six games in eight days.
