Stoughton High Cross Country Runners Take Part in MSTCA Invite

Amy Kelly and Kerry O'Neil medaled for the Stoughton girls' team at the MSTCA Invite held this past Saturday. Several Stoughton boys' also turned in solid efforts.

Another race, another medal for freshman Amy Kelly, this one coming at this past Saturday’s MSTCA Invitational in Wrentham. Kelly finished the freshmen 3K (1.9 mile) race in 12:45, finishing 8th overall in a field of 133.

Kelly set a personal record on the course and earned a medal for her performance.

Both boys’ and girls’ Stoughton High cross country teams took part in Saturday’s MSTCA Invitational in Wrentham. For some it was a final tune-up for the Division championships this upcoming Saturday at Franklin Park. For others, it was the final race of the season.

On the boys’ side, Sean Ellertson (23:16 - 5k) and William Phillips (12:42-3k) made the most of their final race of the season by running personal bests.

Junior Wayne Barnaby (19:15) was the top Stoughton runner in the junior/senior division 5K race, while Alec Denapoli (19:25) paced Stoughton runners in the sophomore 5K race.

Freshmen Luke Butera (23:04) and Jonathan Oliveira (23:48) opted for the longer 5k distance and competed in the same race with DeNapoli. Matt Boykin also ran in the sophomore race and finished in 23:08.

Junior Jack D'Addieco competed in the junior/senior 5K, finishing in 22:05.

David Lockhart (11:50) and Jason Marshall (12:18) ran in the freshmen 3K race and boys’ coach Harvey Blonder said both “excelled in their final tune up before the division meet.”

“David narrowly missed medaling by finishing 53rd. The time was a 30 second improvement over his last race at the same distance. Jason took an incredible two minutes off his previous time on the course,” Blonder said.

On the girls’ side, Kerry O'Neil, Deirdre Simms and Susanna Noe took part in the junior-senior 5K race.

All three “were having great runs when they learned that the lead vehicle took a wrong turn and cut the course,” girls’ coach Bob Clarke said.

Still, O’Neil finished in 19:29, coming in 12th overall (in a field of 230) and medaling. Simms finished in 21:04 and Noe finished in 21:30.

Rebekah Medina and Emelina Kozak both set new personal bests in the sophomore 5K race, with Medina finishing in 24:14 and Kozak finishing in 24:58.

Kaitlin Elwood (14:06) and Shannon Barkey (15:17) competed in the girls’ freshmen 3K race along with Kelly and they both set personal bests on the course as well.
