Stoughton High Comes up Short Against Sharon Softball

Stoughton falls 5-4 at Sharon Wednesday afternoon.

Kelsey Whiting's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie as the Sharon High School softball team defeated Stoughton, 5-4 Wednesday in Sharon.

Brittany Whiting struck out five and walked three for Sharon (6-3), which won its third straight game. She retired the Black Knights in order in the seventh to wrap up the victory. With the loss, Stoughton falls to 3-6.

"Once again, Brittany was just solid.  Just a solid, solid game from Brittany," said Liz Landergen, helping to fill in for Sharon head coach Deb Parker, who is expecting a baby.

Kelsey Whiting's single to left scored Kristine McKee from second with the winning run.

A two-run Stoughton sixth–all with two outs—had tied the score at 4-4.

Bailey Olsen started the rally by walking. Colleen Flaherty then reached on catcher's interference. Olsen scored on Jordan Angelos' single to right, which also put Flaherty at third. Flaherty then scored on an error by Sharon second baseman Jenna Kubiak. Megan Flaherty flied out to center, ending the threat.

After having trouble scoring in Monday’s game against , Stoughton took a quick 2-0 lead in the first.

Colleen Flaherty led off with a single. One out later, she was thrown out at second on Nicole Beauregard's single to center. Megan Flaherty's single to left put runners at first and second. Molly Zuk's one-out single to right scored Beauregard from second and moved Megan Flaherty to third.

With Jess Olans at the plate, Zuk stole second base. Megan Flaherty then scored on a passed ball by Sharon catcher Becky Marder. Olans walked and stole second. But, Megan Guerard flied out to short, ending the rally.

After cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first, Sharon took the lead, 4-2, with a three-run fourth.

McKee started the rally with a one-out single to center, and took second on an Olans wild pitch. Brittany Whiting's fly ball then glanced off Stoughton left fielder Angelos' glove, putting runners at second and third. Kelsey Whiting's RBI single to left scored McKee, tying the score at 2-2, and putting Jamie Reubenstein, running for Brittany Whiting, at third.

With Emily Howard at bat, Kelsey Whiting stole second. Howard then grounded out to short. Stoughton first baseman Olsen then threw home. But Reubenstein scored, and Kelsey scored when the ball got away Zuk at cacther.

"I think the difference (Wednesday) was the defense," Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said. "Sharon had a tougher defense. We gave them a couple of easy runs and we left too many runners on [base]. We just didn't have the timely hits."

Sharon travels to North Attleboro at 4 p.m. Friday. Stoughton (3-6) hosts Canton at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
