Stoughton High Boys' Tennis Enters Win Column

The boys' tennis team snapped a four-year year losing streak with a 3-2 win against Foxborough Monday afternoon.

Heading into Monday’s match against Foxborough, the Stoughton High boys’ tennis team was winless this season (0-10), but also was in the midst of a losing streak that extended more than four years.

Not anymore—the streak has been snapped.

The Black Knights earned a 3-2 victory over the Warriors at Stonehill College Monday afternoon.

“The goal of this team has finally been accomplished, to win its first match,” coach Matt Bernstein said.

When Bernstein took over as coach three seasons ago there was only one returning player, so he had to essentially build a team from scratch, which was not a task to be done overnight.

“Looking back at 2009, coaching a program with only one returning player, no one ever thought that the boys’ tennis team would win,” Bernstein said. “We were determined before the end of the 2011 season that the streak would be no longer. It was team effort and heart that won the match.”

The first doubles team of Chris Oliveria and Joe Ialuna and the second doubles duo of Josh Levenson and Sheldon Oliveria have been bright spots for the Black Knights this season, playing well together since Bernstein reshuffled the lineup early in the season.

Oliveria and Ialuna won 6-4, 6-4, while Levenson and Oliveria won 6-3, 6-0.

With each team having won two matches, second singles player Jalen Joseph won the decisive third match, something which had eluded Stoughton for more than four years, including earlier this season in a .

Joseph topped his opponent 7-6, 6-2, securing the team win for Stoughton.

Bernstein also gave credit to senior co-captain Alex Lobrano for a “solid performance.” Lobrano took his opponent the distance, losing in three sets.

Stoughton, 1-10, looks to start a different kind of streak this week. The team travels to Oliver Ames on Tuesday, faces Norwood at Stonehill College on Wednesday and travels to Attleboro on Thursday.
