Stoughton High Baseball Blanks O'Bryant

The Black Knights earned a 6-0 win Thursday afternoon at home.

In the first eight games of the season, the Stoughton High baseball team scored a total of 18 runs.  But, in their last two games, the Black Knights have nearly matched that total, scoring a combined 17 runs in wins over (11-4) on Monday and O’Bryant (6-0) on Thursday.

Stoughton scored three times in the second and another three times in the sixth off O’Bryant pitcher Jose Vasquez, earning a 6-0 win at home. Stoughton is now 3-7 on the season.

“We had a great game against King Philip, probably our best game of the year on Monday. It was nice just to get a little momentum [with a win],” Stoughton coach Mike Armour said.

“We dug ourselves a little hole [with a 1-7 start] and we’re still trying to get ourselves out of it, but the team definitely seems to be coming together,” he continued.”

Stoughton was led on offense by Alex Fernandes, who went 3 for 4 with three doubles to right field. He drove in two runs and had a stolen base. After missing the first part of the season, Fernandes has made an immediate impact upon returning.

“It’s just his attitude and leadership since he’s been with us—he’s really matured and turned in an all-around improvement,” Armour said. “I’m happy for him, he’s been a great all-around leader for us.”

“I missed the team a lot when I wasn’t here. It feels great to be back and [to] be contributing,” Fernandes added.

Will McGrath, Pat Jackman, and Eric McPherson scored in the second inning to give Stoughton a 3-0 lead. The Black Knights tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, with McGrath, Atticus Rentsch and Cam Colson scoring, to account for the final tally.

While the offensive output was encouraging, pitchers Adam Kenney and McGrath kept O’Bryant off the scoreboard and off the base paths. They combined to throw a one-hit shutout, the team’s first shutout of the season.

Kenney, back from a DECA competition in Orlando, went four scoreless innings, with McGrath pitching the final three. Neither threw more than 17 pitches in an inning.

“They threw strikes, they challenged [O’Bryant],” Armour said. “[O’Bryant] scored zero runs; that’s a tribute to [Kenney and McGrath].”

The team hopes to build on this recent two-game winning streak.

“I feel like this team can beat any team in this league. We’re capable of doing big things and making the tournament,” Fernandes said.

“We got our bats going the last couple of games and I don’t see why we’re going to stop.”

Stoughton hosts North Attleboro at home Friday afternoon, looking to avenge a earlier this season.
