We'll see you Monday night.
The Stoughton High boys' basketball team lives another day as they improved to 9-10 on the season with a 63-52 over Boston Latin Academy in the opening round of the Walpole Hoop Classic Sunday night at Walpole High.
With the win, Stoughton will play host Walpole Monday night for a chance to clinch a berth in the MIAA state tournament. A loss would end Stoughton's season.
A loss Sunday against Boston Latin would have eliminated Stoughton as well, but the Black Knights jumped out to an early lead and cruised to victory.
With 1:57 left in the first quarter, history was made as senior captain Marcus Middleton became the most recent addition to the . Middleton is the third player in the last three years to accomplish that feat for the Black Knights, joining Aaron Calixte and Kris Joyce.
"We were glad to get the "W"; we were glad to get the 1,000 [points]; and we were glad to still be alive with one to go," Stoughton coach John Gallivan said.
While Stoughton will be fighting for an official postseason berth Monday night, the playoffs essentially kickoff with this game against Walpole.
"In a way, we're sort of in because it's elimination now. We lose and the season is over and that is what the state tournament is," Gallivan said.
Against Boston Latin, Stoughton led 16-9 at the end of the first; 42-21 at the half after opening the game up with a 26-point second quarter; and 57-32 at the end of the third, before Boston Latin made a run in the fourth, closing the gap to 11 points by game's end.
Boston Latin received a huge game from Adam Mikula who scored 24 points on the night, including buzzer-beaters at the end of the third and fourth quarters, and kept his team in shouting distance of Stoughton by scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter.
As is the theme of the game with most of Stoughton's wins this season, the Black Knights had a balanced attack across the floor Sunday night.
Marcus Middleton was the high scorer with 12 points; junior Mike Gallagher had 11 points; senior captain Joe Bunce-Grenon chipped in with 10 points; senior Matt Mack had arguably his best game of the season with 9 points; and seniors Eddie Grant and Mauro Oliveira had 8 and 6 points respectively. Juniors Joey Wilder and Stanley Sajous had 4 and 3 points, respectively, on the night.
Stoughton's game against Walpole is Monday at 7:45 p.m.
