Stoughton High Softball Scores 5 Seventh Inning Runs to Pick Up Win Over Canton

The score was tied, 5-5, heading into the seventh inning, but the late game outburst pushed Stoughton past Canton Friday afternoon.

The Stoughton High softball team beat Canton, 10-5, on the road Friday afternoon.

With the game tied, 5-5, heading into the seventh inning, Stoughton's offense erupted scoring five runs before an out was recorded in the final frame.

“Tie game going down the stretch and fortunately our bats woke up in that seventh inning and we put five across,” Stoughton head coach Janet Sullivan said.

“Before the game the big thing for us, our goal was to play seven [innings]. We’ve been playing an awesome four or five innings," said Canton head coach Ed Amico. "But they’re a good team and that seventh inning we gave up five runs. It’s always one inning every game.”

The Black Knights had a 4-0 lead through three innings, highlighted by Michelle Bisbee's 2 RBI single in the second, when Canton scored four runs to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th.

“We helped them out by giving them three errors that inning,” Sullivan said. “Defensive battle. We broke it out. Had a pretty comfortable lead and then you can’t count Canton out. They came right back. Give them a lot of credit."

The Bulldogs took the lead at the bottom of the 5th when Brittany Ferzoco launched a triple to left field scoring a runner from first.

But in the top of the 6th Stoughton was able to tie the game, 5-5, scoring on a wild pitch from pitcher Sarah Reissfelder.

“I give my kids credit for hanging in, they gave up the lead but they didn’t get down and they battled,” Sullivan said.

From there the Black Knights wouldn't look back scoring five runs in the top of seventh inning. Payton Pizzano hit a triple to drive in three runs. Megan Flaherty drove Pizzano in from third with a triple.

Pitcher Emily Cramer came back to close the game out in the bottom of the seventh in a complete game effort.

Stoughton is now 3-5 on the season. Canton sits at 1-10.

“We had a great game out here today. Canton battled real tough. Two good teams,” Sullivan said.

Stoughton hosts King Philip on Monday, April 29.
