Second Half Goals Lead OA Past Stoughton High Field Hockey

Second half goals from OA's Stephanie Watson and Alicia Alleyene led the Tigers to 2-0 victory over the Black Knights on Monday in Easton, on OA's senior night.

After playing a scoreless first half, Oliver Ames scored two second half goals to beat the field hockey team 2-0 Monday night at Muscato Stadium in Easton.

The Black Knights were attempting to spoil senior night for Oliver Ames, but second half goals from Stephanie Watson (at 4:53) and Alicia Alleyne (14:01) were enough to down the winless Black Knights.

With the victory, OA returned to the .500 mark and is now 5-5-3 overall (3-5-3 Hockomock League, 3-2 Davenport Division).

Stoughton falls to 0-8-2 (0-8-1, 0-5).

After a strong effort near the end of the first half that saw forwards Kayla Floro and Amanda Crean narrowly miss on scoring chances, Stoughton could not generate that momentum at the beginning of the second half.

“We definitely didn’t play well in the second half at all,” Stoughton coach Dan Mark said. “OA definitely played a much better second half. I thought we played a good first half and we had our chances, but you always have to play two halves.”

Despite not getting much support offensively, Stoughton goaltender Christina Bacon put in a solid effort making 10 saves on the night.

“I thought she played pretty well,” Mark said. “She’s a little disappointed with how things turned out, but I thought she made some really good saves [Monday night].”

The second half was a nice ending to cap off the contributions from the OA class of 2012 on senior night.

Thanks to the efforts of seniors Jacqui Freeman and goalie Haley Arnold, OA’s defense held the Black Knights to few scoring chances on the night.

While OA’s defenders helped with the transition game, they also jumped in and created some chances offensively.

“The defense dominated tonight,” OA coach Janice Sundell said. “They were part of our offense, too. We had them involved in penalty corners and got them into the transition game too. I’m glad to see that from them. I wish it happened a little sooner, but they’re really stepping up and doing a nice job for us late in the year.”

Stoughton returns to the field for a 3:30 p.m. contest Thursday at Sharon. Meanwhile, Oliver Ames takes on undefeated Canton on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
