Pizzano, Kerman Lead Sixth-Inning Rally to Give Stoughton High Softball Win over Quincy

Clutch hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 Stoughton lead, with the Black Knights defeating visiting Quincy 3-1 Friday afternoon at home.

Without a hit on offense heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Stoughton High softball team was trailing visiting Quincy 1-0 Friday afternoon, but behind big hits from Payton Pizzano and Nicole Kerman, the Black Knights rallied for the comeback win, 3-1.

With the win, Stoughton improves to 5-11, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Quincy scored a run in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth as both pitchers - Emily Cramer for Stoughton and Saxon Bresnahan for Quincy - were in control.

Megan Flaherty walked to put runners on first and second with two outs and Kerman due up.

Kerman singled, scoring both Pizzano and Flaherty, with Stoughton going up 3-1. It turned out to be the game-winning hit.

"It's a tough spot to be in or a great spot to be in depending on what your mindset is and [Kerman] was up for the challenge," Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said. "She stepped up there, she was confident, put the ball in play with a beautiful little single and drove in two runs and that was the game."

Cramer kept Quincy off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to end the game.

"We were only in the game because Emily Cramer did such a great job on the mound and Payton Pizzano cut down a couple of runners that they had," Sullivan said.

"All in all, a great defensive game and just enough offense to get the win," Sullivan added.

Stoughton will look to sweep the season series against Canton when the Bulldogs travel to Stoughton on Monday. The Black Knights then conclude the season at Quincy on May 24.
