One Cool QB For Stoughton Black Knights

Stoughton High head football coach Greg Burke knew what he had in sophomore quarterback Jake Gibb.
Early in the season, Gibb was on the shelf with an injury, but when he was ready to go, he stepped in, first sharing time with senior quarterback Stanley Sajous and then taking over when Sajous hurt his ankle late in the season.
"He's going to be a real good one," said Burke during the regular season, but stopping to throw up a caution flag for the sophomore, joking, "I just want to get him through practice on Monday."
Gibb kicked a 25-yard field goal with 1:13 left for a 16-14 win to give the Black Knights the title.
With a young quarterback, especially in a tough league like the Hockomock League, you have to be careful not to throw them to the wolves too early.
Gibb is very effective, managing the game by handing the ball off to the likes of Lennox Green, Joe Girolamo and Jovani Pires as part of the Black Knights' explosive offense.
In the fourth quarter of last Friday night's Division 3 Southwest final against Oliver Ames, the Black Knights were trailing, 14-13 with the ball on their own 25-yard line.
Calm and collective, Gibbs marched the Black Knights down the field, throwing two big passes to junior tight-end Brian Crimmins and escaping on a run for an 8-yard gain and a big first down.
When the Black Knights were faced with a fourth down and six situation, Burke elected to go with a  25-yard line field goal.
"I didn't know what was going to happen; I was just hoping for the best," said Gibb. "Earlier in the game, I couldn't make the first one."
His teammates settled him just before one of the biggest kicks in Stoughton High history.
"The team calmed me down for sure," said Gibb. "My holder Jovani Pires told me to calm down and take a deepbreath. That's what I had to do."Gibb is now developing into the starting quarterback role.
"I'm definitely more comfortable with the guys," said the sophomore. "We can rely on a lot of people. "We know we are a strong running team. The blocking was key (against OA.) We just hit the holes and kept running."
