Letter to the Editor: Stoughton High School Golf Team Completes 303 Holes to Make Golf-A-Thon a Success

SHS golfers were seeking to raise funds to defray the cost of the expensive equipment, apparel, and instruction. The team members solicited pledges for each hole they were able to complete over a 10 hour span.

On Saturday April 9, the boys and girls of the Stoughton High School golf team held a very successful Black Knights Golf-A-Thon fundraiser at Cedar Hill Golf Course in Stoughton.  The team was seeking to raise funds to defray the cost of the expensive equipment, apparel, and instruction necessary to be competitive in the difficult Hockomock League.

The team members began the process of staging the event by soliciting pledges for each hole they were able to complete over a 10 hour span.  On the day of the event, golfers competed to play the most holes and maximize pledges.

By the end of the day, Stoughton High golfers were able to complete 303 holes and, thanks to the generosity of the community, raise funds that are crucial to the team’s future success.  According to senior golf captain Connor Heffernan, “It was great to be able to raise funds and help the program by doing what we enjoy doing–playing golf.”

Some of the many highlights included golfers Hunter Goodrich, Michael Milavec, David Elmowitz, and Josh Rubenstein arriving to the course early and battling fatigue to complete 45 holes over the course of the day. Additionally Brian Carter, Connor Heffernan, Marcos Baugh, Lily Lamplough, Jamie Connors, and Shamus Pitts all contributed to the effort by completing more than 18 holes.

According to Kevin Smith, the SHS Golf Coach, “These kids did an excellent job in making this whole thing happen.  They pounded the pavement to solicit pledges and were committed to playing as many holes as they could today. They supported each other to keep on playing even though it was pretty obvious they were exhausted after 27 or 36 holes.”

The team would like to offer a special thank you to the Stoughton community for its generosity and to Jody Smith of Cedar Hill for his support in staging this successful event at the golf course.
