Jackman's Game-Winner Gives Stoughton High Boys' Soccer Second Victory

The Stoughton High boys' soccer team beat Mansfield 2-1 on Friday. Stoughton freshman Kyle Silverman turned in an impressive effort in goal.

The Stoughton High boys' soccer team upset Mansfield Friday afternoon on the road, defeating the Hornets 2-1 for Stoughton's second victory of the season.

An impressive defensive effort along with timely scoring allowed the Knights to come out victorious on an afternoon where all of Stoughton was mourning the loss of SHS senior David Wade. Wade, 17, died following a tragic accident on Sept. 29 and his funeral was held Friday morning.

Stoughton got on the board in the first half on a goal by junior Chris Rego. After Mansfield tied the game 1-1, senior Pat Jackman scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the 25th minute of the second half.

Senior Michael Cardoso talked about his team's resiliency Friday afternoon.

"It was a good bounce back from our game against King Philip [a 5-0 loss on Oct. 3].  The team worked well together and everyone can agree we did it for Dave."

Jackman was also impressed with his team's performance against Mansfield.

"It was great to come out with the win. It's always nice to beat a school in the Kelley-Rex no matter what the sport is.

Jackman also discussed having to play while coping with the loss of his classmate.

"We showed a lot of heart. Many of us went to David's funeral that day and we were geared up and we came out firing. It was just a great win all around. We had everything going for us. The offense was working well together, we had two injuries early in the game but we stuck it out, and Silverman made some good saves in net."

Stoughton will look to keep the run going when they play Randolph Tuesday afternoon in a non-league contest.
