How Will Davenport Division Football Shake Up?

With two games remaining in the season, the division is still up for grabs, but Stoughton controls its own destiny in the quest for the Davenport title.

With nine weeks down and two weeks remaining, Hockomock League football is far from over. And, for the first time ever, two teams from the league will advance to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) playoffs.

While Mansfield, King Philip and North Attleboro battle for top honors in the Kelley-Rex "big school" division, the fate of the Davenport "small school" Division rests in the hands of the .

At 2-0 in the division with Oliver Ames (Friday) and Canton (Thanksgiving) remaining on their schedule, the Black Knights are the only remaining undefeated team. Oliver Ames and Sharon both sit at 1-1, while Canton and Foxborough sit at 1-2. A win Friday night against OA secures a spot in the state tournament for Stoughton.

An OA victory on Friday swings the momentum to the Tigers, though, who play Sharon on Thanksgiving. While OA has lost three games in a row, including a 27-21 loss to Canton last week, the Tigers are still the most capable of challenging Stoughton for the title.

There is still a glimmer of hope for the Sharon Eagles as well. While a Week 4 to Stoughton hangs over their heads, a perfect end to the season along with a few stars aligning could send Sharon to the state tournament.

For Canton and Foxborough, chances are slim. They cannot win the division outright, but tying is not out of the question.

While a head to head match-up determines a two-way tie, things get tricky after that. In the event of a three, four or five-way tie, the team to allow the fewest points against divisional and common opponents would advance.

Currently, Stoughton leads the division, having only allowed 130 points overall, 20 of which were to . Oliver Ames has allowed 143 points overall and 36 to divisional opponents. Sharon has allowed 215 points overall, and 41 to divisional opponents.

While Canton and Foxborough have played one more divisional game than the other three teams to this point, Canton has allowed 194 points overall and 84 to divisional opponents and Foxborough has allowed 166 points overall and 57 to divisional opponents.

In other words, for Canton and Foxborough to have hope, they better be playing some tough 'D' in these final two weeks.

Here are ten scenarios that could occur in the final two weeks of the season.

Scenario One:

Stoughton beats Oliver Ames and Canton to finish 4-0.

The Black Knights win the division outright.

Stoughton advances

Really? Somehow the ten team Hockomock league is now broken into two divisions? Split it yet again and you'd have almost a 50/50 chance or winning a title. As a prior Hock league participant, I'm sad and disappointed to learn what has been done to "level the playing field". Why can't kids learn to compete the real way in the real world? Why can't parents keep this about their kids?
