Hockomock League Football Recap: Nine Teams Still Unbeaten After Week 2

Hockomock League football teams continued their strong play in week 2, with nine of the league's 11 teams picking up wins. Eight teams have started the season 2-0 and one is 1-0.

Week 3 schedule:

• Friday - Attleboro at South Kingstown, RI (7 p.m.); Abington at Canton (6 p.m.); Whitman-Hanson at Foxborough (7 p.m.); Franklin at Lowell (7 p.m.); Mansfield at Dracut (7 p.m.); North Attleboro at Bishop Feehan (7 p.m.); Pembroke at Stoughton (7 p.m.); Durfee at Taunton (4 p.m.)

• Saturday - King Philip at Westwood (7 p.m.); Oliver Ames at Bedford (noon); North Quincy at Sharon (1 p.m.)

Week 2 game recaps are below:

Davenport Small Schools Division

In the only week 2 matchup between Hockomock League schools, Stoughton pitched a shutout on defense forcing six turnovers at Taunton Friday afternoon en route to a 22-0 win.

Stoughton, now 2-0, recovered three fumbles (Aaron Mack and Joey Wilder), recorded three interceptions (Andrew Valle, Tim Porter and Malachi Baugh) and scored all 22 points off Taunton turnovers, including 14 in the fourth quarter.

Frankie Morris scored on a five-yard run; Mack scored on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Dan Eckler; and Baugh capped the scoring with a 56-yard touchdown run.

A 29-point second quarter propelled Oliver Ames to an eventual 43-22 win at North Quincy Friday afternoon to improve to 2-0.

OA scored four touchdowns in the quarter - St. Clair Ryan run; two Nick Cidado touchdown passes (to Greg Cummings and Mike McMillan); and a 30-yard interception return on defense from linebacker Joey Tepper.

Mike Berksza scored the Tigers' two second half touchdowns, including one from 85-yards out.

Tepper finished the day with a two-point conversion reception, an interception for a touchdown and a forced fumble.

Foxborough 40, East Providence (RI) 6

Foxboro Patch editor Jeremie Smith reports:

Kiivone Howard and the Foxborough High School football team ran over East Providence Friday, 40-6, improving to 2-0 on the season. 

Howard continued his impressive start to the year, tallying three more rushing scores Friday to give him six through two games. He scored on a 52-yard touchdown run and twice on 12-yard runs. 

Foxborough's Jess Todd also caught a pair of touchdown passes in the Warriors win - one of 30 yards and one of 22 yards. The Warriors led East Providence 33-0 at halftime.

Sharon 16, Rockland 0

Sharon High traveled to Rockland on Friday and came away with a 16-0 victory, improving to 2-0 on the season.

It is the first shutout victory for the Eagles in 11 years, according to the Hockomock League Football website.

Evantz Elizma and Frank Sullivan had touchdown runs. Eric Lesser also kicked a 19-yard field goal in the Sharon win.

Canton 21, Quincy 12

Mother Nature and EEE prevented Canton from finishing its game against Dennis-Yarmouth last week, so the Bulldogs technically made their debut Friday at Quincy.

After a 51-yard touchdown run by Dexter Green put Canton up 7-0 in the first quarter, Quincy scored touchdowns in the first and third quarters to take a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth.

But Canton turned in a strong fourth quarter with Green scoring twice (1-yard run and 2-yard run) to turn the five point deficit into a 21-12 Canton win. The Bulldogs are now 1-0.

Kelly-Rex Large Schools Division

The King Philip offense scored five touchdowns, all coming on runs, beating Medfield 40-8 on the road Friday evening, giving KP a 2-0 start to the season.

Running back Joe Johnston led the way for KP with 220 yards and 4 TDs. Ryan Dunn added a touchdown run and Sam McDonald had an interception return for a touchdown.

King Philip is 2-0 on the season.

In a clash between what many pundits consider to be two of the best high school football teams in Eastern Massachusetts, Needham went on the road and beat Mansfield 21-14 Friday evening.

Trailing Needham 14-7, Mansfield's Robert Rapoza tied the game up at 14 with a 64-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The run came the play after Michael Hershman intercepted a pass on defense.

However, Needham pulled ahead again with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, going up 21-14. Mansfield advanced the ball to the Needham 12-yard line with just 29 seconds left to play, but could not convert a fourth down play, with Needham holding on for the win.

Mansfield falls to 1-1 with the loss.

Attleboro 35, Dartmouth 20

Four first-half touchdowns allowed Attleboro to take a 28-6 lead into the half. Malique Clark and David Duquette scored on runs and Tim Walsh threw two touchdown passes, one each to Clark and Shawn Reardon.

Two Dartmouth touchdowns in the third quarter made it a one score game, 28-20, but Clark responded with a 54-yard run, accounting for the final score.

Clark had three touchdowns as Attleboro improved to 2-0.

North Attleboro 27, BC High 7

After BC High opened up scoring with an interception return for a touchdown, North Attleboro scored the final four touchdowns of the game, earning a 27-7 win on the road Friday night and improving to 2-0 on the season.

Ryan Perron ran for a pair of touchdowns. Alex Jette and Jack Blase also had touchdown runs for NA.

Franklin 31, Arlington Catholic 6

Clinging to a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter at home against Arlington Catholic Friday night, Franklin turned in a strong fourth quarter to come away with a 25-point win, 31-6.

Nick Zucco had two of Franklin's three fourth quarter touchdowns. Robert Dellorco capped the scoring with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Franklin is now 2-0.
