Hockomock League Football Recap: Hock Teams Roll in Week 1

A recap of Week 1 football action in the Hockomock League.

While the games don't count towards league standings, and have little impact on playoff eligibility, Hockomock League football teams got off to a hot start in week 1 of the high school football season, with all teams winning their respective openers with the exception of Taunton (Canton's game was suspended).

Week 1 game recaps are below.

Week 2 schedule - all games are Friday, September 14: Stoughton at Taunton; Oliver Ames at North Quincy; Attleboro at Dartmouth; Canton at Quincy; Foxboro at East Providence; Arlington Catholic at Franklin; King Philip at Medfield; North Attleboro at BC High; Sharon at Rockland; Needham at Mansfield.

Davenport Small Schools Division

Stoughton traveled to Holliston Friday night in a rematch of the 2011 season-opener, a 28-15 win for Holliston. But, the Black Knights were the superior team this time around.

Aaron Mack had two rushing touchdowns, Frankie Morris had a rushing touchdown, and quarterback Dan Eckler had a touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Kelly.

Linebacker Adam Leonard made the defensive play of the game, intercepting a pass with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Holliston, trailing 20-13, was in Stoughton territory, looking for the game-tying score. Instead, Stoughton got the ball back and nine plays later (including penalties), a 21-yard touchdown run by Mack, followed by a two-point conversion run by Morris, put Stoughton up 28-13 with 1:22 left.

Oliver Ames, the defending Davenport Division champions, rode a hot start to a 14-6 win Saturday afternoon at home.

On just the second play from scrimmage, OA running back St. Claire Ryan ran 61 yards to the end zone to give the Tigers an early 6-0 advantage.

Later in the first, quarterback Nick Cidado lateraled to Reid Starr and Starr then hit a wide-open Greg Cummings for a 48-yard TD strike. A completion to tight end Sam Kelly for a two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 14-0 lead, and that was all the scoring the Tigers would need, holding Medfield without a score until the final minute of the fourth.

Cummings also came up with three interceptions (all in the first half) on defense.

Foxborough 34, East Longmeadow 10

Foxborough traveled to East Longmeadow Friday night. The Warriors jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the half, en route to a 34-10 victory.

Kiivone Howard ran for three touchdowns, including an 89-yarder, and Alex Pacitti scored on a catch and run for 53 yards.

Canton, Dennis Yarmouth (Suspended)

Trailing 12-0, Canton came back and took the lead, 14-12, against Dennis-Yarmouth Friday night in Canton, but then Mother Nature got in the way, with a lightning storm causing a lengthy delay.

The following is from the Canton High School Athletics website:

"The break resulted in the situation of the game going well past the 8:00 curfew due to EEE. So- as of now, the game is recorded as a suspended game. Every attempt will be made to make the game up later in the season."

Kelly-Rex Large Schools Division

Mansfield 49, Westfield 15

A 22-point first quarter helped the Mansfield Hornets to a 49-15 win over Westfield Saturday night at home.

Kyle Wiesnieski had a pair of first quarter touchdown passes (30 yards to Brendan Hill and 73-yards to Mike Hershman). Rob Rapoza capped the scoring in the third quarter with an 88-yard touchdown run.
