Girls' Basketball Falls Short in Holiday Tournament

Girls' basketball falls short in first round of first year playing in Hingham Holiday Tournament.

For several seasons, the Stoughton High girls’ basketball team (1-2) played in the Milton Holiday Tournament each December. But last year the annual event was scrubbed and without the tournament head coach Janet Sullivan and the Black Knights had a 16-day layoff.

The added rest proved not to have been the best thing for the team and it resulted in an 0-6 start when play resumed.

Toward the end of last season, though, Stoughton won a non-league contest at Hingham and was invited back to play in the Hingham Tournament this holiday season, along with Coyle & Cassidy, Cohasset and the host team.

On Tuesday night, the Black Knights squared off against a very strong Coyle & Cassidy team in the opening round of tournament play and fell, 57-33, to the high-powered defending Division-3 South Sectional Champions.

The Black Knights were able to create some good offense at the outset of the game against C&C, taking a 9-8 lead after the first quarter. Stoughton had success working the ball inside to its double threat – junior Nicole Daniels who scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and senior tri-captain Chrystal Holland who chipped in 11 points of her own.

However, in the second and third quarters, Coyle & Cassidy dominated defensively and offensively, playing very tough man-to-man and outscoring Stoughton 33-8 to build an insurmountable lead. Stoughton didn’t have a field goal in the entire third quarter and managed just two free throws.

“They played us very tough defensively, but we needed to create more offense and shoot more instead of taking that extra pass,” said Sullivan. “We also didn’t play well under the boards and gave them too many opportunities.”

A bright spot was the performance by the Black Knights in the final quarter, playing Coyle & Cassidy even at 16-16, and utilizing an effective full court press of their own. Kayla Motley, a sophomore forward, contributed a solid effort with 6 points off the bench.

After winning its season-opener at Foxboro, Stoughton (1-2 overall, 1-1 in the Hockomock League and 1-0 in the Davenport Division) has now dropped two consecutive games, at home against Franklin and to Coyle & Cassidy, but hopes to get back to its winning ways tonight against Cohasset at 5:00 PM in the tournament consolation game. Hingham will battle Coyle & Cassidy in the championship matchup.
