Gallery: Cramer, Zuk, Senior Captains Lead Stoughton High Softball to Victory

The Stoughton High softball team beat visiting Sharon 8-0 Wednesday afternoon.

A shutout performance from pitcher Emily Cramer, a key defensive play in centerfield from Emma Zuk and timely hitting from senior captains Jordan Angelos, Michelle Bisbee and Megan Flaherty propelled the Stoughton High softball team past visiting Sharon Wednesday afternoon.

The 8-0 win was the first of the season for the Black Knights (1-3).

"I don't feel like I [had] an 0-3 club coming into this game," Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said.

The bats then really heated up in the later innings. Bisbee had a two out single to drive in two in the fourth inning, to put Stoughton up 4-0. Stoughton followed with two more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Flaherty's RBI triple, and two more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Angelos' RBI triple.

"At the beginning [of the game] I thought they were a little over anxious at the plate, but once they settled down we got some nice hits, had some good aggressive base running," Sullivan said.

Sullivan also praised her pitcher, Cramer, who turned in another solid effort.
"Emily has been doing a great job all season, but today particularly her curveball was working great and she had good control. She only gave up six hits to a team that has some good bats," Sullivan said. "Overall we had some good defense behind her and she did a nice job and we walk away happy with a win."

Sullivan credited Kerry Backman at third and Flaherty at shortstop for their defense, but Zuk's play in center was the defensive gem of the game. Zuk caught a fly out and was able to throw the ball to catcher Payton Pizzano who then tagged the Sharon runner trying to score from third. The double play ended the Sharon half of the fourth inning.

"Emma Zuk just threw a strike to home plate and a lot of credit to Payton Pizzano to hold on to that, a big crash at home plate," Sullivan said.

Stoughton will look for its second win Friday at Quincy.
