Canton Edges Stoughton High Boys’ Indoor Track By Single Point

After the two schools tied in 2009 and 2010, the Bulldogs earned a 48-47 win over Stoughton this year.

Heading into Saturday’s meet at BU, Stoughton and Canton’s scoring differential was zero in the last two indoor track meets between the two schools.

The had tied the Bulldogs in both 2009 and 2010.

In 2011, just one point separated the two Davenport Division rivals, and unfortunately for Stoughton, they came up on the short end of a 48-47 final, where several places were decided by less than a second, coach Harvey Blonder said.

“Races became all out sprints for place and unfortunately the Knights were defeated by the slimmest of possible margins,” Blonder wrote in an email.

With the heartbreaking loss, Stoughton falls to 0-2 on the season.

Nick Green led Stoughton, winning both the mile (4:45) and 2-mile (10:39) events, qualifying for the state meet for the first time.

Brandon Alves (shot put, 48'3”), Pat Jackman (55-meter dash, 7.02 seconds), Harley David (55-meter high hurdles, 7.19 seconds) and Zach Gibb (long jump, 17'8”) all won their events, recording personal bests.

Virtually the entire team set a personal record in some event, with the team continuing to run well in the early season, Blonder said.

Blonder said John Eppenstein; Michael Paulkner; Kevin McDonald; Andrew Kelley; Tevin Afonseca; Jason Marshall; Mike Romaine; Jack D'Addieco; Sheldon Oliveira; David Lockhart; Alec DeNapoli; Mark Phan; David Wilson; Wayne Barnaby; Ben Cromwell; and Kevin Lucas all recorded personal bests in events ranging from sprints to distance to hurdles to jumps and relays.
