Attleboro Blanks Stoughton High Softball

The Stoughton High softball team fell 2-0 at home on Wednesday, but still remain atop the Hockomock League's Davenport Division.

The chase to a postseason berth continues for the , but it has hit some bumps after consecutive shutout defeats this week.

Stoughton lost a pivotal home game on Wednesday afternoon to Attleboro, 2-0, shutout for the fifth time this season. The Black Knights have not scored in 16 straight innings, as the once potent bats have gone silent.

The Black Knights drop under the coveted .500 mark with a 6-7 overall record and a 4-5 Hockomock League mark, but remain a perfect 4-0 atop the Davenport Division (small schools).

The Black Knights, however, will still secure a postseason bid with a first place finish in their division, even if they end the season with an under .500 overall record.

Attleboro (Kelley-Rex large schools division) jumps to 5-7 overall and continues its uphill fight for a post-season berth.

Stoughton stranded seven runners and could only muster three hits against Attleboro sophomore pitcher Hannah Smith. Stoughton sophomore hurler Emily Cramer also pitched very well allowing just one earned run, but got no offensive support from her teammates.

Jordan Angelos, a junior, senior Kelsey Moriarty and junior Megan Flaherty had hits for the home team, while senior third baseman Nicole Barton had two stellar fielding plays.

Cramer, Flaherty and junior centerfielder Emma Zuk also displayed fine defense for Stoughton.

“Defensively, we played well enough to win, but offensively we need to come around and get more timely hits and take advantage of our scoring opportunities,” said a disappointed Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan.

“We let an important game get away from us and we didn’t play with our normal high intensity. With only one home game left in our final six games we put ourselves in a much tougher position.”

Attleboro scored single runs in the second and fifth innings on RBI singles by juniors Bridgette Proulx and Kirsten Terrien. Keely Viau, a sophomore, also paced the Attleboro offense with three of the team’s six hits.

“We were very fortunate to win this game, but we need to improve our offense (only six hits) and base running (two runners thrown out),” said Attleboro coach Deb Carreiro. “We also need to take one game at a time starting with Monday’s home game against Oliver Ames, and continue to improve.”

Stoughton is next in action on Monday, as well, at . The Black Knights will play their next four games on the road, the next three against Davenport Division opponents that they have already beaten this season.

“We need to be able to beat the Kelley-Rex teams and we haven’t done well against those teams (0-5, all shutouts) this season, but we have done well in our Davenport Division (4-0), but we have to play everyone again and it is a very balanced division and we have our work cut out for us,” Sullivan said.

“We have a very hard working team and a resilient group and hopefully we can bounce back heading down the stretch.”
