Cooking Up a Culinary Program

By Emi Kozak and Amanda Hoffman

The time has come again at Stoughton High: course selections sheets are out. Picking your schedule for the upcoming year is already stressful, especially when you don’t feel like any classes apply to you and your future.

Stoughton High offers many different courses for students interested in engineering, health and sciences, English majors, history majors and many others. The one thing that the school has never provided is a culinary class for all students to participate in.

Mrs.Ruschioni, an English teacher at Stoughton High, said “Lots of students would benefit from a program. There should be more technical programs here in general- automotive, wood working, etc. I would love to see more technical programs for our students who are not college bound.”

There are not many courses for the different variety of majors that students are planning to take in their future. This results in a lack of background information and experience, which can help someone decide whether or not they want to enter that major.

Aspiring culinary chef Giuseppe Areniello said this course would help because “It would look good for college; it would show that you have culinary experience and you’re serious about your future.”

Students like Areniello could benefit by improving their abilities and this is a chance for student’s hobbies to transition into a potential career.

Senior Becca Medina stated her opinion saying, “If people are really interested in their major, the school should do something about it. I also think colleges would like to see you take the class and get experience in the field.”

Although SHS does allow a cooking program for students, it is only available to English Second Language members, and the dishes are only provided to the faculty. This limits other students to participate and get the knowledge that they need to obtain before graduating.

Hopefully in the upcoming years, Stoughton High will expand their variety of classes available to students. We need to be introduced to a bigger selection of majors and careers that are available in our future. We hope to see a culinary program that Stoughton High supports for the approaching years.
