Two Stoughton High Seniors Receive Superintendent’s Academic Award of Excellence

Kerlyne Jean-Baptiste and Muhammad Mir were honored with the award at the Nov. 22 School Committee meeting.

Two well-rounded seniors were honored at the Nov. 22 School Committee meeting for their academic and extra-curricular achievements.

Kerlyne Jean-Baptiste and Muhammad Mir were this year’s recipients of the Academic Award of Excellence, which is sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.

Superintendent Dr. Marguerite Rizzi presented Jean-Baptiste and Mir with their awards. The honor is based on work done during the first three years of high school. Eligible candidates have to be in the top five percent of their class.

Currently, Jean-Baptiste and Mir are respectively ranked fourth and sixth in their class, both with grade point averages (GPAs) north of 4.0. Both are honor roll students and are members of the .

In addition to their success in the classroom, Jean-Baptiste and Mir are both active members of the Stoughton High community.

Jean-Baptiste is the president and founder of the Stoughton High chapter of Junior State of America (JSA); a news editor of the SHS Knight, the school newspaper; a mentor and tutor in the Fruition Scholars Program, a program for minority students in the honors and Advanced Placement classes; and a member of the SHS Law Club and Mock Trial team. She had previously served on the school’s Student Council.

Mir is on the math team, a peer mediator, a fruition scholar, and a tutor at the Stoughton Public Library’s Monday night Homework Center. In the past he has volunteered at the New England Sinai Hospital and at the Hansen School Fair.

Both are also student athletes: Jean-Baptiste is on the cross country team. Mir is on the SHS soccer, indoor track and tennis teams.

After receiving their awards, both Jean-Baptiste and Mir thanked their teachers and parents for their continued support.
