Third Graders at the West School Bring Historical Figures to Life at Wax Museum

Third graders at the West held their annual Wax Museum exhibit last Thursday, May 26.

It wasn’t Halloween at the last Thursday, but all the third graders there were in full costume.

There were three classrooms full of students looking like Benjamin Franklin, Deborah Sampson, Paul Revere, George Washington, and even Dr. Seuss.

The third grade classes at the West held their annual Wax Museum, open to parents and other students in the school, the afternoon of May 26.

The third grade history curriculum focuses on Massachusetts history, so the students dressed as influential men and women from the state, like John Adams or John F. Kennedy, or people with ties to Massachusetts, like George Washington.

Each student also made a poster or a visual aid, and had a written biography of their historic figure.

Third grade teacher Toni-Jo Guardabascio said a project like this helps to “bring it home” for the students.

“They get to investigate on a higher thinking level; it makes it more real,” she said.

The third grade classes of Mary Kowalczyk and Kathleen Monahan also participated in the project.

The third graders spent the afternoon in costume answering questions about their character as visitors passed by each exhibit.
