Stoughton's Adam Elmowitz Will Be Tooting His Horn in Europe This Summer

If were Lebron James, he would say that he is taking his talents to Europe this summer.

A junior at , Elmowitz is a decorated trumpet player in the SHS concert, jazz and marching bands. He has been selected to take part in the Sound of America (SOA) Honor Band, which in it’s 35th year of existence is “recognized as one of the finest and most successful European Concert Tour programs,” according to a press release.

Elmowitz will join the SOA Band for a 23-day concert tour, which includes nine performances in six European countries.

“I was just really excited. It was a big deal to me and my family and my relatives that I made it into something like this,” Elmowitz said.

Elmowitz will be traveling to places like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Luxembourg, visiting cities like Paris, Venice, Innsbruck, Cortina, Stresa, Verona, Rothenburg, Grindelwald, and La Chaux-de-Fonds.

“I always told my parents I wanted to study abroad, so I figured this might be a good chance to tour foreign countries and see what it’s like out there,” he said. Elmowitz said he doesn’t know the other members of the SOA band and chorus, but is looking forward to the bonding experience.

You can say Elmowitz’s affinity for music comes from his father Lee, a professional trumpet player. Elmowitz started getting lessons from his father in second grade and later joined the school band in the fourth and fifth grade.

Upon entering high school, he started working with Ron Christianson, the former Fine Arts Director for the Stoughton Public Schools.

“He’s a phenomenal trumpet player and all of his advice has helped me,” Elmowitz said of Christianson.

Between group practices and performances, Elmowitz plays about 12 hours a week with the Stoughton High band, not to mention countless additional hours of individual practice.

But his devotion to playing trumpet doesn’t prevent him from being well-rounded. Elmowitz is a member of the National Honor Society, works part-time as a lifeguard at the YMCA, babysits some of his campers from his summer job as a counselor at Camp West Woods and also umpires during Stoughton Youth Baseball season.

Elmowitz and the other members of the Sound of America Honor Band will meet at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania for a four-day orientation starting July 1. Then, he’s off to Europe.

Selection into The Sound of America membership is a distinguished honor for all participants. All applicants are chosen after a rigid character and musical evaluation.

Students who have qualified for The Sound of America membership are responsible for all costs involved with the trip. Frequently, however, local businesses and civic clubs who have an interest in helping deserving students will offer some financial sponsorship to the student representing their community.
