Stoughton Student at Southeastern Regional Earns Gold Key in Scholastic Art Awards

Stoughton's Natasha James, an 11th grader at Southeastern Regional, received a Gold key honor for her photograph "Before the Storm."

Nearly 14,000 images were submitted as individual category entries and as part of portfolios created by over 6,500 individual students, so Natasha James, an 11th grader from Stoughton, was taken by surprise when her photograph “Before the Storm” received a gold key award.

“I didn’t believe it at first. I looked at [silver key winner Louis Tony Perez] and said ‘are you serious?’”

James is Southeastern Regional’s first Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards gold key recipient.

She expressed appreciation for her Design and Visual Communications (DVC) teacher, Ms Shirley Ezerins, who helped her in many ways.

“She helped me develop my creativity more: to structure my idea, direct it, focus on it,” James said.

James also recognized Lucy Cook for helping her with the wording of the caption for her photograph.

As a gold key winner, James is eligible to apply for a summer program scholarship for $2,500.

During the week of February 14, 2012, Southeastern’s DVC students had the opportunity to view the exhibit of exemplary student work at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza in Boston, featuring the prize winning photograph of James as well as the works of other individual Gold Key and Silver Key students.

The exhibit, which is open to the public, remains on display until April 20, 2012, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m..

Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School is a public 9-12 vocational high school located in Easton, Massachusetts, serving approximately 1,250 students from the city of Brockton and the towns of Stoughton, as well as East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxboro, Mansfield, Norton, Sharon, and West Bridgewater.
