Stoughton, Sharon Volleyball Teams Will Be “Digging For A Cure” Friday Night

For the second straight year, the two high school volleyball programs will play for cancer research. The freshmen, JV and varsity level matches will be held at Sharon High on Friday.

It was because of monetary donations and the support of the town that the volleyball program exists, coach Ken Gay said. For this reason, he likes to have his team “pay it forward” and give back to the community.

Earlier this month, the volleyball team organized a “” 5K walk, which raised close to $3,500 for the American Cancer Society.

On Friday, Stoughton will travel to Sharon and the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity squads from the two schools will play in the second annual “Digging for the Cure” event.

As Sharon Patch editor Michael Gelbwasser wrote, regardless of the final result, “the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society will win” these Friday matches.

Sharon High will be making a donation to the Dana Farber, while Stoughton will be presenting a check to an American Cancer Society representative who will be in attendance. Those attending will be asked to donate $5.

“It’s all going to a good cause,” Gay said. “It’s going to cancer research—that will benefit everybody.”

Last year Stoughton hosted the event between these two schools, and it was such a success that Sharon wanted to host it this time around.

While October is breast cancer awareness month, and it is expected that players will be decked out in pink accessories—socks, hair ribbons, face paint, etc.—and the hope is that the crowd will be “pinked out” as well, the two schools will be playing for all types of cancer.

Prior to the start of the freshmen, JV and varsity matches, players from both schools will be introduced and will announce that they are playing in memory of someone who died of cancer, or in honor of a cancer survivor.

State Representatives Louis L. Kafka (D-Stoughton) and William C. Galvin (D-Canton) are scheduled to introduce the varsity players prior to their match.

Once the varsity match begins, Stoughton (8-6 and winners of their last five matches) will be focused on earning their . With the program in its fourth year, Stoughton is just one win away from qualifying for the state tournament.

The freshmen match is expected to start around 4 p.m.; the JV will start around 5:30 p.m.; and the varsity will start around 7 p.m.
