Stoughton School Commitee Asks Teachers To Meet More in Contract Dispute

Stoughton school committee chairman Joyce Husseini asked Stoughton Teachers Association members to meet face-to-face to work on the contract dispute at Tuesday's meeting.

What has been happening is that members of the Stoughton Teachers Association have been showing up for recent school committee meetings to ask the school committee to agree to contract demands. Petitions from the Jones and Dawe schools were read at the meeting, calling for the two parties to work together. Similar petitions have been read at previous school committee meetings.

The petitions ask the school committee to work together with the teachers association on retaining and attracting quality teachers in the system, and eliminating the conflict in the district.

Husseini said she has made herself available at 4 p.m. on school committee meeting to dates to discuss the contract.

"I'm open to any solutions to get us back to the table," said Husseini.

She said the two sides aren't accomplishing anything with the STA showing up at the school committee meetings, and suggests they meet in the proper format for contract talks.

Husseini did address the questions of whether the money turned back to the town from the schools could have gone to salaries.

She told the STA that that wasn't possible because the money was returned because of special education placements, and couldn't be designated for salaries.
