Stoughton High Sports Captains Bond at Hockomock Captains’ Conference

fall, winter and spring sports captains traveled to Lake Pearl Luciano’s in Wrentham on Wednesday for the annual Hockomock League Captains’ Conference.

The 49 SHS sports captains in attendance joined captains from the league’s other nine schools.

The conference stressed the importance of sportsmanship and leadership in athletics.

Sports is more about “just winning and losing,” Stoughton High athletic director Ryan Donahue said.

“There’s a lot of young adults out there trying to do the right thing,” he said. “It’s fantastic getting them in one place.”

“We got to interact with people from other teams,” Stephen Colling, a senior captain on the wrestling team, said when asked about some of the benefits of attending the conference.

He said off the field, athletes are able to still have friendships with the athletes from other towns, but are also able to remain competitive when facing off.

Captains said they enjoyed the bonding—with the other Stoughton captains from different sports and with the other captains from around the Hockomock League.

“[We’re able to] learn what their team does; talk to other captains and learn their best leadership practices,” Deirdre Simms, a senior captain for the girls’ cross country and track teams said.

The captains can set the tone for their respective teams, a point Donahue drove home when the captains arrived back at SHS.

“If you’re not acting responsibly,” he said, “no one will look up to you.”
