South School Second Graders Have a Hoot Seeing Owls and Other Birds of Prey

Second graders in Barbara Mills and Jess Rosenthal’s classes at Stoughton’s got an up-close look at some of the birds they had been studying in their owl unit when Jim Parks, a licensed raptor rehabilitator, visited the elementary school the Friday before April vacation.

Parks brought along some birds of prey—a few owls like the Great horned owl and the tiny saw-whet owl, as well as a peregrine falcon—to show the students.

The students were eager to share their knowledge about birds.

The birds Parks showed the students the afternoon on April 13 had all been injured at some point and had gone through rehabilitation. As part of the “Wingmasters” program, Parks brings these birds to many schools throughout New England for various educational lessons.
