South, Gibbons Schools Honor Student Achievement

Each School presented dozens of students with awards as part of their respective Flag Day festivities.

The and Elementary Schools honored dozens of students for their character, service or athletic achievements earlier this week, following their respective celebrations.

The South School presented Student Council Awards to members of the school’s Student Council, and presented Character Trait Awards to students who exemplified at least two of the following traits: acceptance, caring, cooperation, fairness, honesty, kindness, responsibility, respect and forgiveness.

At the Gibbons School, Sarah Widrow and Andrew Crean received the Fifth Grade Citizenship Award, sponsored by Gibbons School retired teachers.

The award is presented annually to students who exhibit the following qualities: active participation in the school and in the community; serving as a role model for younger students; demonstrating good citizenship; being respectful of adults and peers; being helpful and considerate; taking responsibility for his/her own actions; and demonstrating leadership.

Retired teachers Phyllis Kelleher and Mary Anne Foley, as well as former recipient Anthony LaCivita (Gibbons School class of 2000) presented the awards. Widrow and Crean’s names will go on a plaque that is on display in the school’s library. They also received a savings bond as part of their award.

Gibbons School physical education teacher Steve Simolaris presented Project Fit Awards to students who excelled in various fitness challenges like the mile run, 40-yard dash, push-ups or curl-ups.

He also awarded Mrs. MacLeod’s Grade 4 class with the Golden Sneaker Award, a large trophy given to the class that best demonstrates teamwork, sportsmanship, and remembers to wear their sneakers everyday to gym class.
