Sharon High Asks Visiting Sports Teams to Arrive Later

Last school year, visitors warmed up at Sharon High far before Eagles' dismissed classes.

Visiting teams often were warmed up and ready to play before the Eagles' school day ended last year, Sharon High Principal Jose Libano said.

The later school schedule Sharon High implemented last fall created a "feeling that other teams had some sort of advantage because they had more time to warm up," he said. Those schools dismiss earlier than Sharon, which ends at 2:40 p.m.

In a letter, Libano asked Hockomock League principals and athletic directors (which includes Stoughton High) to have their teams arrive in Sharon no earlier than 3:15 p.m. for contests starting between 3:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. unless the athletic directors agree otherwise.

"This would be sincerely appreciated and would not affect anything that either school is already accustomed to experiencing when engaging in an interscholastic match," Libano wrote.

Athletic Director Ryan Donahue said Stoughton would have no issues accommodating this request.

“Stoughton High respects any and all efforts to improve students’ overall high school experience in any district,” Donahue wrote in an email to Stoughton Patch.

“We are happy to accommodate the requests of Sharon High School, and will be looking forward to competitive interscholastic match-ups this school year.”

The fall sports season openers are right after Labor Day.

Libano said other schools with later starts are "doing the same kind of thing" as Sharon.

"Everyone should arrive at the same time now," he said.
