Photo Gallery: Stoughton High Fall Sports Awards Night (2011)

Thirty athletes were recognized Monday night (12/5) for their performance on and off the field of play.

The athletic community gathered Monday evening in the SHS auditorium to celebrate the end of the fall sports season.

Thirty student-athletes were honored for their performance on and off the field this season.

Awards for team MVP, sportsmanship and scholar athlete were presented (full list of award winners below).

The players on each respective team vote for the team MVP and for the sportsmanship recipient. The Scholar Athlete award goes to the athlete on the team with the highest grade point average.

Eleven athletes in seven different sports were named Hockomock League All-Stars. The Hockomock coaches vote for League All-Stars.

And, senior , a libero for the volleyball team, received a special plaque commemorating her school-record 1,638 career digs. She is the first and only player in the four-year history of the program to surpass the 1,000 dig plateau.

While many individual accomplishments were recognized at the Dec. 5 ceremony, there were a number of team-wide accomplishments this season in Stoughton High sports.

The earned its . The team also received a Gold Medal for Academic Excellence from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) for having a team GPA above 3.5 at both the varsity and JV level.

The football team turned in its first winning season since 2006 and finished tied atop the Davenport Division. The Black Knights for the seventh straight .

They also upset defending Division 2 Super Bowl Champion Mansfield on the road, , earning coach New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week honors.

The cheerleading team qualified for States for the sixth straight year, and for the first time ever received a bid for Nationals.

And off the field, Stoughton High was one of just eight schools statewide to receive a from the MIAA. SHS was honored at the 18th annual MIAA/MSSADA Sportsmanship Summit, held at Gillette Stadium on Nov. 18.

In his remarks at the sports awards ceremony, SHS Principal Matt Colantonio said back when he was a first-year wrestling coach at SHS he thought it was “all about the W’s,” but realized at Stoughton High, “we’re not building better soccer players, track runners or football players. We’re building better people.”
