New Roofs, Windows Requested by Stoughton School Committee

The Stoughton School Committee is asking for money to do repairs on elementary schools in their request for town meeting articles and budget.

They are looking to do the following:

- Replace the Gibbons School's roof - $2,590,000

- Replace the Gibbons School's windows - $1,330,000

- Additional funds for the Hansen School's window replacement - $717,000

- Additional funds for the Dawe School's window replacement - $753,000

- Additional funds for the West School's roof replacement - $622,000

School committee chairman Joyce Husseini wrote in an email, "These numbers are all on the high end based on early work with the architect on the current accelerated repair projects. The final numbers presented to FinCom are expected to be significantly lower. Early issues with the window projects had projections for issues that were not found to be in the scope of the projects - the presence of hazardous materials on both of the window projects and estimates for full remediation that involved masonry removal and replacement turned out to include no issues at the Dawe and isolated issues at the Hansen that will not require the extensive abatement that was projected.

"Final numbers reflecting these changes are not in yet but expected before these articles are presented to FinCom.  Likewise, discrepancies in the projections on the West roof replacement are being further investigated by the OPM (Owner's Project Manager) assigned to us by the MSBA.  This number is also expected to be significantly lower.

"The Gibbons window and roof replacement costs were estimated based on the same percentage increase over our study numbers to be conservative, but will be adjusted as well when final numbers are returned on the current accelerated repair projects."

The votes were 3-1 with Husseini, Deborah Sovinee and George Dolinsky voting in favor. Dr. Endern Ural was against the Gibbons school articles, because he objects to the school facility committee being the authority in funding. Dr. Carol Brown was unable to attend the meeting because of the bad weather.
