Hansen Elementary "Communities" Celebrate End of School Year

The Hansen School took a trip to Camp West Woods on Tuesday, June 7 for a day of outdoor fun. Check out the photo gallery for pictures from the trip.

The entire Community enjoyed a day of fun at last Tuesday, June 7. Approximately 300 students arrived at the Camp with their individual communities.

“We have 18 communities, fuchsia, tan, lime, etc., with every staff member being linked to one group. Each group had two adults which included classroom teachers, specialists and support staff.” Administrative Secretary Marybeth Cancellieri said.

Principal Faye Polillio spearheaded this thematic initiative.

“It was the culminating event for the ‘Year of Community,’” Polillio said.

“The entire school attended, as we are all part of the Hansen Community. The ladies in the kitchen to [custodian] Mr. Hermenegildo to [secretary] Mrs. Cancellieri. Mr. David Guglia, the Assistant Principal at the O’Donnell Middle School, came to answer phones at the Hansen that morning so everyone could be out of the building.”

Camp West Woods owner, Steve Kramer along with the camp’s Program Director, Michienzi Flynn were instrumental in the Tuesday’s success.  Kramer and Flynn, with the support of their entire staff, implemented over a half-dozen physical activities, including water play and a scavenger hunt.

The students had an opportunity to cool off in the shade while enjoying some fresh popped popcorn, provided by the Hansen School P.T.O. No matter how warm the day got, the kids appeared to enjoy every moment.

Superintendent, Dr. Marguerite Rizzi, joined in the fun as well.  While spending some time getting to know some of the Hansen parents, Dr. Rizzi shared her appreciation “for the great deal of work that goes into putting together such an event.”

The amount of work certainly does not deter Mrs. Polillio. She exhibited her commitment to the community initiative, by saying,  “We will be keeping the communities next year just adding the incoming kindergartners along with anyone who moves into the school over the upcoming school year.  We will incorporate them into our new “Year of” theme.

“Year of Community was intended to encourage cross-grade level relationships along with having the older students "guide" the younger students,” Polillio continued. “I feel it was a great success and look forward to continuing next year.”
