Gallery: 55th Annual Stoughton High School Science Fair

Photos of the projects and award winners from the annual SHS Science Fair.

More than 250 members of the SHS student body took part in the 55th Annual Stoughton High School Science Fair held Feb. 27-28 at the school.

Judging of the various projects took place on Feb. 27, with an open house, engineering competition and awards ceremony held Feb. 28.

Awards were presented in 11 different judging categories.

First place winners received a Prone Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Science. 

Winners in the traditional research project categories are eligible to participate in the regional and statewide science fair. The South Shore Regional Science Fair will be held at Bridgewater State University on March 9, 2013.

55th Annual Science Fair Award Recipients:

Research Project (Individual)

  • 1st Place - Julia Sjoquist (Foreign Effects on Marshlands)
  • 2nd Place - Alec DeNapoli (Electrolytes in Drinks)
  • 3rd Place - Tim McGrath (Half the Zakim Bridge)
  • Honorable Mention - Callie Concannon (What's Eating Your Pipes Lately?)

Research Project (Group)

  • 1st Place - Jacob Finer & Kevin J. McDonald (Save Some Green by Going Green)
  • 2nd Place - Amanda Glickman & Emma Sinkus (Are Saccharin and Aspartame Indicative of Cancer? Examining the Mitotic Rate of Allium cepa with Artificial Sweeteners)
  • 3rd Place - Robert Mone & James Slattery (Current Events)
  • Honorable Mention - Bobby Blindt & Alex Peixinho (Rolling Thunder)
  • Honorable Mention - Niamh Fennessy & Daniel Block (Pains, Pains Go Away: The Chemistry of Antacids)

Gravity Vehicle*

  • 1st Place - Alex Peixinho & Bobby Blindt
  • 2nd Place - Will McGrath & Sheldon Oliveira
  • 3rd Place - Marcus Middleton & Nicole Kerman

* The objective of this event is to design/construct a vehicle and ramp that uses gravitational potential energy as the vehicle's sole means of propulsion to reach a target point as quickly, as accurately, from the lowest elevation and as close to the predicted time as possible.

Micromole Rockets*

  • 1st Place - Adren Tran & Steven Borst
  • 2nd Place - Garrett McCormick & Lucas DeAndrade
  • 3rd Place - Lennox Green & Adam Khalek

* The objective of this event is to optimize the fuel mixture for a miniature rocket and launch it so that is is propelled the furthest distance.

Mouse Trap Cars*

  • 1st Place - Aaron Needs
  • 2nd Place - Nick St. Peter & Brian Walsh
  • 3rd Place - Michael Johnson & Aayush Pokharel

* The objective of this event is to build the mousetrap-powered vehicle able to travel the greatest straight-line distance. 

Interpreting Biological Data*

  • 1st Place - Adam Potter
  • 2nd Place - Callie Concannon & Danielle Tarchara 
  • 3rd Place - Jonathan Oliveira & Terrence Hylaire

* The objective of this event is to interpret DNA and morphological data to build a phylogeny for a particular DNA biological organism.

Wind Turbine*

  • 1st Place - Wayne Barnaby & Nicholas Kampouris 
  • 2nd Place - Raj Patel & Nicholas Quattrucci
  • 3rd Place - Rachel Armany

* The objective of this event is to design and construct a propeller system that generates the greatest voltage. 

Robotics - Swept Away*

  • 1st Place - Marcus Nelson & Daniel Goldberg
  • 2nd Place - Jacob Ben-David & James Mulrey IV
  • 3rd Place - Adren Tran & Peter Cariofiles

* The objective of this event is to design and construct a robot to place footballs and softballs on the opponent's side of the playing field. Students must control their robots in a single elimination tournament. 

Construction Challenge*

  • 1st Place - Team Bazinga (Vicky Tran, Captain, Guy Eddy, Dan Goldberg, Kiana Kountze, Susanna Noe, David Rodriguez)
  • 2nd Place - Team Tim's Titans (Hunter Goodrich, Captain, Zachary Gibb, Jonathan Kerman, Tessa McKeen, Erin Pike, Michael Sabanty, Kate Tumilty)
  • 3rd Place - Team Armada (Michael Paukner, Captain, Tevin Afonseca, Kathleen Cellucci, Jalen Joseph, Christopher Madden, Breanna Mendonca, Kazimir Sheputa)

* The objective of this event is to design and build small vehicles that are able to reliably, and accurately, travel specific distances. The team must use at least three different power sources for the vehicles, and present a story about the dangers faced by vehicles, told from the point of view of one or more vehicles. 

Cover Design

  • 1st Place - Sarah Mellyn
