Stoughton Police Station a 24/7 Center for Prescription Drug Disposal

The Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled another prescription drug take-back day for Saturday April 28, and while Stoughton will not be hosting an official take-back event like the town did , there is a location in town where residents can properly dispose of prescriptions 24/7/365—the .

There is a secure that can be found in the lobby of the Stoughton Police headquarters on Rose St.

Residents can dispose of these unwanted or expired prescription drugs at the police station—no questions asked.

With the Food and Drug Administration recommending against flushing unused medicine down the toilet or disposing of it in household trash, for environmental and other reasons, these containers provide a safe method of disposal, Norfolk County District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey and Stougthon Police Chief Paul Shastany said in a press release.

The costs of purchasing this container were split between the Norfolk County DA’s office and the Stoughton Police Department.

“Proper disposal of prescription drugs is better for the environment and helps prevent ecological harm,” Stoughton parent Todd Brown, a Clinical Instructor and Vice Chair of Northeastern University’s Department of Pharmacy Practice, wrote in an email.

“Unused prescriptions should be discarded and not left in the home,” Brown continued. “This prevents accidental ingestion by children, the elderly or pets.  It also helps reduce teenage drug abuse by decreasing access to prescription drugs.”

“The container is self-serve and situated in the lobby of the police station ready to be used,” Chief Shastany said in a press release. “Taking a few minutes out of your day to safely dispose of your un-used prescriptions can prevent crime and, frankly, the destruction of lives.”
